Hi Ed,
Sorry I didn’t reply sooner, but with work and all I haven’t had time. The trip was great, wonderful weather and getting to see old friends.
Unfortunately, we didn’t eat at as many places as I wanted to. We did eat at Andrea’s. I had the fried halibut and chips and my husband had the oysters and chips. The food was good and the location wonderful. We really enjoyed sitting outside on an August evening which is something we don’t do in Texas, unless we want to sweat.[:(]
We ate tri-tip at a place in Camarillo. I don’t remember the name of the place, but the food was only okay. The tri-tip was pretty tender.
We drove up to Santa Barbara and stumbled onto the Sat. morning farmer’s market. It was really fantastic. We bought some wonderful fruit and bread and had a picnic on the beach.
Most of our time was spent at the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp. We spent all of Sunday at the Ventura Co. fair especially the horse show as that is my thing. I sat through training camp, so my husband sat through the horse show! [:)] We ate some pretty good fair food; corn dogs, hotdogs, etc. Oh, we also ate at In’N Out burger twice. We just love that place! My husband bought a T-shirt to take home too.
Not too exciting food-wise, but we had a great time and I was happy to see that things hadn’t changed too much in the Camarillo area. A lot of the agriculture is still there (lemon, avocado orchards) and my old neighborhood looked really good.

Well, Allison, how was the trip?
Davydd,
I just finished dinner…..and now you’remaking me hungry again![:D]
Here is that breaded pork tenderloin sandwich Ed Sails likes from the Top Hat in Ventura. I haven’t sampled it. The picture comes from a high school classmate of some 40 plus years ago now living in California. The picture is fresh this year.

Ok…I called my friend – it’s Taqueria Vallarta. Definitely get the big watermelon juice.
Also try the Cottage Cafe on Thompson Road for good breakfast.
EdSails,
you’re right.
but there’s been a change.
they broke the chalice from the palace
and replaced it with a flagon
with the figure of a dragon.
my head hurts.
no..the pellet with the poison’s
in the vessel with the pestle..

Thanks, Ed for the info. I’m not sure if we will have time to drive up to Santa Barbara, but if we do I thought Cold Spring might be a good place to try.

The Ranch House is still there. It is known as the birthplace of "California Cuisine". I drive by it often and the parking lot is always full so that’s still a good sign. It is very expensive from what I understand. I’ve never been there—-but I would figure it to be good. There is a new place in Ojai called Feast Bistro—-I’ve seen some good writups on it. Their menu looks good—–I may try it this weekend.
In Ventura, if you’re looking for upscale, Jonathan’s is excellent. Mediterranean cuisine, with excellent crab bisque, meat, seafood and poultry dishes. Nice location—–looks right across at the Mission.

I’ve read good things about the Cold springs Tavern but have never made it there to eat. It’s pretty much off the beaten paty on the way to Solvang/Santa Ynez. Might be nice if you were heading that way but I don’t know if I would make a special trip for it.
Thank you Ed and John for the Mexican restaurant suggestions. I have another question for you or anyone else. Have you ever tried the Ranch House in Ojai or Cold Spring Tavern outside of Santa Barbara? Cold Spring Tavern looks interesting, but is it just a tourist-trap?
Allison
For some of the best Mexican in the area, try Familia Diaz at 245 S. 10th St. in Santa Paula – Si
John in Portland

I finally got the name of the Mexican place in Oxnard.
Taqueria El Tapatio
421 S Ventura Rd # 10, Oxnard, CA

Huge burritos, excellent ceviche tostadas and tacos. I highly recommend the shrimp cocktails—-you’ll see most tables have at least one. Make sure you try the fresh pico de gallo at the chip and salsa bar too—-excellent! Very informal—-place your order at the counter and they bring it to the table when it’s ready. And be prepared for a line—–it’s very popular.
