The Onion Burger Beyond El Reno
The fried onion burger capital of Oklahoma, therefore the world, is the tiny town of El Reno. But onion burgers are a popular item throughout this burger-crazy state. The best onion fried burger we have found is at J & W Grill in Chickasha.
Diner Where The Locals Eat
A small, striking, red and white building on busy West Choctaw Avenue, J & W Grill has only 16 counter seats. We were fortunate enough to grab a couple of stools in front of the grill. From here, we had the opportunity to watch the cook in action. The man doing the cooking was owner Darren Cook. He told us that he used to have a paper route that took him past the restaurant before starting to work here at age 12.
Burgers For Breakfast
Even though it was only 9:00AM and there were tempting plates of pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and thick, grilled ham being sent out to customers, we came to try the onion burger, no matter what time it was. We watched Mr. Cook pile a mountain of sliced onions on top of the patty on the grill. Soon after, he gently laid the buns on top of the beef for a few minutes. In this position, the buns absorb not only warmth from the burger and grill, but the perfume of beef and onions.
Is This The Very Best?
Oh, what a beautiful burger Mr. Cook makes! I’ve never seen so many onions on a burger. ribbons of onion hang out from underneath the bun on all sides. Rather than merely resting on top, the onions have infused themselves deep into the meat. The beef patty itself develops a nice outside char. Along with its mess of caramelized onions, J & W Grill presents an image of onion-fried burger perfection!
