Doumar’s Cones & Barbecue

Review by: Michael Stern

Doumar’s Cones & Barbecue of Norfolk, VA is marked by a sign with two big ice cream cones on either side, a reminder that Abe Doumar, the founder, invented the ice cream cone.

What to eat at Doumar’s Cones & Barbecue in Norfolk, VA

You can still get ice cream served in a freshly-made waffle cone, but before dessert, this is a good place to eat cheeseburgers and hot dogs, as well as peppery pork barbecue sandwiches, served with coleslaw in the bun.

If cones aren’t your passion, another ice cream treat worth knowing about is Doumar Cones & Barbecue Reggie, which is a milkshake that is enriched with pieces of waffle cone. Chocolate is the preferred flavor for Reggies, but you can also have raspberry or vanilla. Also on the menu are such soda fountain arcana as a June Bride, which is that’s chocolate ice cream topped with strawberry sauce; a Scope (vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet topped with hot fudge sauce; and a Kingston Flat (strawberry shortcake with bananas). Milk shakes are good, too.

This classic drive-in fare is served by veteran car hops in old-fashioned drive-in style: dine off trays hung on the half-rolled-down window of your car.
