Purple Hull Market | Southern Plate Lunch And Big Steaks

Although it is best known for the Southern plate lunch it serves during the week, the Purple Hull Market also attracts serious carnivores for weekend “steak nights.” On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, starting at 5pm, the chef char-cooks gorgeous aged ribeyes and sirloins. They’re cut here, so you have a choice of sizes that range from 10 to 22 ounces. When I debated how much meat I wanted, staff member Julie Palmer, sister of owner Ray Henderson, advised, “The bigger the steak, the better.” So I lived large and went for the biggest steak in the house. Out comes a mammoth reef of beef. Profuse marbling makes it weep juices the moment you touch it with a utensil. To be clear, you are not getting a toothless-tender steak. It’s not tough, but this is meat that rewards a good chew.
Southern Plate Lunch
Tuesday and Wednesday, the Purple Hull serves only lunch. The lunch menu offers less a splurge than a good old Southern plate-lunch. Entrees include the likes of chicken pot pie, pot roast, meat loaf, fried chicken, and Friday catfish. Most folks get their entree as part of a meat-and-2 configuration. On the side, you want traditional sides. Choose from among mac & cheese, rutabagas, squash casserole, turnip or collard greens, sweet potato souffle, cheesy broccoli casserole, and okra & tomatoes. Many people forgo an entree altogether in favor of a plate of three or four vegetables. Procure meals at the hot bar, where you see what’s available and the server plates it for you.
For dessert: house-made fruit cobblers (blackberry, loaded with fresh fruit, is a standout), pecan pie, apple pie, and brownie/ice cream pileups.
Purple Hull Market really began as a roadside produce stand and only subsequently morphed into a restaurant. It continues to offer a selection of seasonal vegetables and fruits, butcher-block offerings, peanuts, and locally-made jellies, syrups, sauces, and preserves.
