Widman’s Candy Shop

Review by: Michael Stern

Widman’s Candy Shop in Grand Forks, ND

This incredible candy shop is known for its unusual chocolate-covered savories that represent some of North Dakota’s crops: wheat nuts, soybeans, sunflower seeds, and – best of all – potato chips. The chocolate-covered chips are called chippers, and they are a surprising harmony of sweet and salt, melting chocolate and crunchy fried potato. Chippers are available enrobed in milk chocolate or semi-sweet dark chocolate, as well as white chocolate bark.

What to eat at Widman’s Candy Shop

Other than the weirdly addictive chippers, our personal favorite among Widman’s candies is the one known as “hot air.” Known elsewhere as sea foam or fairy food, these are chunks of crunchy spun molasses coated in chocolate. They quite literally melt in your mouth.

It is a joy to stop in the little candy store in Fargo to inhale its chocolaty aroma and sample some of everything. But if you’re not in the neighborhood, Widman’s will mail chocolates by the pound and gift box. Because chocolate melts in hot weather, mail-order sales are available only between October 1 and May 1. As the lady behind Widman’s counter told us, “If you are comfortable, the candy will be, too.”

Note: Widman’s also is located in Grand Forks, ND, and Crookston, MN.
