Boots’ & Sonny’s

Review by: Michael Stern

Boots’ & Sonny’s is a family-run drive-in with a sterling reputation earned primarily for its house-made chili. Oh, the hot dogs and hamburgers and bologna sandwiches and French fries all are just fine in their short-order way, but a spill of chili atop of any of them is transformational. It is a meaty, no-bean brew with creamy texture and complex spice profile that includes enough pepper to snap taste buds to attention.

Beyond hot dogs and hamburgers topped with house-made chili, the menu includes an array of hot and cold sandwiches, chicken tenders and wings, BBQ and hash, 8 different milk shake flavors, and lovely strawberry shortcake.

Many customers avail themselves of drive-through window service, but I highly recommend coming in to eat. An enthusiastic staff who really seem to enjoy what they do add upbeat personality to the meal.

Boots’ & Sonny’s has been a locals’ favorite since 1962. The original store is in Spartanburg. Landrum is the second location. And by the way, kudos for the proper use of apostrophes!)
