Twede’s Cafe | Twin Peaks’ Damn Fine Cup of Coffee
Review by: Michael Stern
As Seen on TV
If you were a fan of the cult-favorite TV show “Twin Peaks” in 1990-1991, you will experience deja vu when you come upon Twede’s Café. Formerly Thompson’s Café, then the Mar-T Café, Twede’s is where character Dale Cooper went for his favorite snack: cherry pie and a “damn fine cup of coffee.” North Bend’s three-meal-a-day diner now makes the most of its moment of pop culture fame, billing itself as the “Home of Twin Peaks Cherry Pie.”
The pie satisfies in a TV-diner sort of way. Its thick crust and tart filling come together when the waiter crowns it with a large dollop of soft-serve vanilla ice cream. Famous as the pie is, a better dessert here just might be the lemon bar. But only if you really like lemon bars. This one is large and intensely lemony, not the least bit subtle, but overwhelmingly sweet. Brownies are equally immense. But lackluster chocolate is their undoing. Truth be told, the desserts we like best at Twede’s Café are Rice Krispie treats – a textbook balance of cereal’s crunch and melted marshmallow’s chew.
Dinners to precede the sweets are good versions of immemorial diner fare. This is the right place to come for a gravy-smothered chicken-fried steak. Good quality French fries accompany flamboyantly dressed bacon cheeseburgers. Roasted and carved in-house bird makes the hot turkey sandwich a good bet. If you need a serious rib-sticker, consider stout beef-and-bean chili. At breakfast, bacon is double-thick. Generous amounts of cheese, ham, or whatever you want fill well-made omelets. Pancakes, however, are doughy beyond redemption. And the biscuit, heavy as hardening clay, could only be an acquired taste.
A Fun Tourist Attraction
While we don’t love all the food, we do like Twede’s Café’s buoyant personality. Waitresses do their job with enthusiasm and it fun to sit at the counter or in a booth and watch star-struck “Twin Peaks” fans take selfies with their cherry pie and coffee.
