Dish | Idaho Panhandle Food-Lover’s Destination

Review by: Michael Stern

Stylish Casual Eats

Dish is an Idaho Panhandle food-lover’s destination. You can’t easily categorize its cuisine. It serves as the commissary of a residential/rental resort on the shore of ravishing Lake Pend Oreille. Arrive wearing shorts and sandals. You’ll feel perfectly comfortable at the waterside grill. Come for nothing more than a hamburger, tacos, or fish and chips. But don’t expect pre-fab food. Those burgers, tacos, and fish and chips display culinary skill.

That’s right: Do not mistake the casual mien of Dish for kitchen sloth. Be assured of the cooks’ talents when you explore more sophisticated dishes on the menu. Buffalo meat loaf adorned with chipotle barbecue sauce and gorgonzola crumbles dazzles the palate. Dan Dan udon noodles in Korean chili display real culinary skill. Anyone looking for good food in the vicinity of Sandpoint won’t find a better opportunity.

Potatoes and Bacon

In Idaho, potatoes rule. Consider an item called “smashed potatoes.” They’re par-boiled then fried until a well-salted leathery coat envelops their soft insides. Add what the menu bills as “world famous bacon.” This bacon makes even a simple BLT a dish to dream about.  It comes as mahogany ribbons that are as succulent as pork belly. But they pack the crisp-chewy delight that only thick-sliced bacon delivers

Vegetarian or Not

That same bacon also functions as the unlikely star player in a vegetarian burger. Yes, trusted voices from the kitchen tell us that three out of four people who order veggie burgers get them with bacon! Beefless they may be, but the bacon’s piggy virtue is an intensely pleasurable animal-fat complement. Burgers arrive on a sesame bun with garlic aioli, lettuce, tomato, onion. French fries come alongside.

Note: Dish has limited hours in the winter. The rest of the year this Idaho Panhandle food-lover’s destination is open daily from 11am to 9pm.
