Oven Mastery

Sugar Magnolia makes its breads and pastries in limited numbers every morning. Often, favorites sell out. Still, any time you arrive, there will be too many temptations to taste all that beckon. Some items earn accolades as Georgia bests. Sticky buns, for instance: If you like sticky buns, come Friday or Saturday. Waffles appear only on weekends, too.

Quality ingredients make everything this bakery makes memorable. Pastries resonate with buttery richness. Splendid baguettes contain no butter, of course, but neither to they need any. They taste great with no adornment. Buttermilk biscuits glow with fetching dairy twang. They rise to the next level when split, buttered, and grilled and served with jam. Sweet pastries, such as a cranberry walnut scone and an apple turnover, are just sweet enough, but do not cloy. A ham and cheese roll comes wrapped in pastry dough as elegant as a Parisian croissant. It provides a refined balance of pungent pig meat and sharp cheddar.

Three Meals a Day

Sugar Magnolia is a morning pastry-and-coffee place for many regulars. Lunch, brunch, and dinner deserve attention, too. The menus list dishes in French-language categories (Les Entrees, salades). At lunch, select a masterful Cuban sandwich or a California BLT that includes avocado. The dinner menu ups the ante with filet mignon, Faroe Island salmon, and lamb loin. Come for brunch Saturday or Sunday. Weekends offer the opportunity to tuck into challah French toast, shrimp & grits, or eggs Benedict made with prosciutto. Pizzaphiles come Tuesday through Saturday after 3pm for pie that is among the Georgia Bests. Sugar Magnolia tops its pizzas with free-range duck confit, Texas fajita meats, or soppressata, shrimp, and truffle oil.

Celebration Cakes

Sugar Magnolia also makes whole cakes. The repertoire includes a 7-layer caramel cake, red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, and designed-to-order custom cakes for weddings and birthdays.
