925 Nuevos Cubanos | Florida’s Cuban Culture

Review by: Michael Stern

Casual Cuba

Restaurant, juice bar, art gallery, and multi-faceted ode to the Pearl of the Antilles, 925 Nuevos Cubanos provides a vivid taste of Florida’s Cuban culture. Informality rules; dine al fresco. Choose either a counter seat at the edge of Andrews Avenue or one of the picnic benches stretched out along the side of the long building. Tables afford a view of paintings, sculptures, assemblages, odes, and proclamations, all having something to do with Cuban culture and expatriate politics.

Menu Highlights

Classic Caribbean dishes include handsome plancha-pressed sandwiches, empanadas, ropa vieja, and a super-succulent roast pig platter. Orange juice and fruit smoothies quench thirst. The Cuban sandwich, loaded with tender shreds and hunks of slow-roasted pulled pork, ranks among the region’s best. Whatever else you eat, be sure to bite into a few chicharrones. Their crisp, fatty crunch sends taste buds into rapture. Early in the day, strong coffee is great with toasted Cuban bread or a mango-filled pastele that flakes into 1000 pieces at the lightest touch.

The Wonderful Papa Rellena

For something you won’t find in too many restaurants, even in south Florida, check out the papa rellena. That crisp-fries a mix of mashed potatoes and vividly seasoned beef. The cook then stuffs this savory melange into a length of bread, then press-cooks it in the plancha.

A Locals’ Favorite

925 Nuevos Cubanos provides a home to anyone who wants a full meal or just to linger over snacks. Even if you seek nothing more than a cup of coffee and a pastry, it deserves attention. The energetic vibes and friendly staff embody the warm hospitality for which South Florida’s Cuban culture is known. Locals have made it a favorite destination since 1976.

Note: Parking is scarce. Despite a sign warning that you can’t leave your car on the sidewalk, everyone does.
