Escape to a Culinary Oasis: Discover the 9W Market and Filling Station

Review by: Kate O'Hara

Located just 12 miles north of the George Washington Bridge, outside of New York City, lies a hidden gem for food lovers. The Filling Station and the 9W Market are two incredible food destinations that offer a unique and unforgettable dining experience. Once a gas station built in 1939, the Filling Station has been transformed into a charming eatery with white gravel, picnic tables, and colorful umbrellas. Next door, the 9W Market is an open-air natural wood building that buzzes with energy and excitement.

What to eat at 9W Market and Filling Station in Palisades, NY

The 9W Market is a family-run business that focuses on natural and organic foods. They offer artisan pizza, home-baked pastries, cakes, and bread. Owner Agata Ostrowska recommended the egg sandwich, and it did not disappoint. Made with organic eggs and local cheeses including cheddar, Swiss, and smoked mozzarella, this sandwich was packed with flavor. The thick-cut double-smoked bacon added a salty touch, all nestled between homemade ciabatta bread.

The Breakfast

If you’re not in the mood for breakfast, there are plenty of other options to choose from. The salads at the 9W Market are fresh and delicious. I tried several different salads including fava bean with tomato puree, onion and olive oil; heirloom tomatoes with olive oil, basil and shaved parmesan; sautéed spinach; quinoa with kale, sunflower seeds and cranberries; wheat berry with cranberry, celery and lemon raspberry vinaigrette; and roasted potatoes with lemon, olive oil and rosemary.

The Pizza

The aroma of pizza was too tempting to resist, so I had to try one of their artisan pizzas. I chose the traditional margherita pizza and it was fabulous. The sweet tanginess of the tomatoes combined with the creaminess of the cheese was a perfect combination. The crust was crispy yet soft with a subtle tang from the homemade sourdough.

To accompany my pizza, I ordered a glass of pinot noir wine. As I sipped my wine, I couldn’t help but notice how unique the crust was. I later learned that it took several months to perfect the homemade sourdough crust.

The Lobster Roll

Before leaving, I had to try one more fan favorite: the lobster roll. Made with the meat of a 1.25-pound lobster on a buttered and sea-salted roll, this lobster roll was pure perfection. No fillers like celery or lettuce were used – just succulent lobster meat and homemade mayo. The roll was served with homemade chips and a roasted corn salad.

In summary, the Filling Station and 9W Market offer an incredible food oasis just outside of New York City. With their focus on natural and organic foods and their commitment to using fresh ingredients, these two destinations are a must-visit for any food lover.
