Dewar’s Candy Shop
Review by: Cliff Strutz
What to eat at Dewar’s Candy Shop
Dewar’s Candy Shop has a large selection of enticing chocolates for sale, but it is best known for taffy chews. The original flavor and biggest seller is peanut butter, which has a pocket of finely chopped peanuts buried inside the taffy. The mixture of crunchy nut and creamy chew are an unbeatable combination. They’re about the size of a Tootsie Roll; a handful makes an ideal snack. Other available flavors include almond, caramel, caramel pistachio, peppermint, and Tiger Chews — which taste like orange creamsicle.
Wonderful as the taffy chews are, locals flock to Dewar’s for cones, cups, and sundaes of made-in-house ice cream — all the more enjoyable due to the sparkling, old-fashioned soda-fountain ambience. The room is eye catching with its long, marble counter, bright pink stools and chairs, plus a black-and-white checkered tile floor.
Banana splits are carefully crafted with luxuriously rich vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice creams and a generous amount of toppings. These include enough marshmallow that it quickly turns into an avalanche if you aren’t quick with your spoon. Those with a voracious sweet tooth might consider the Grandpa Jim’s — a six-scoop monster of a banana split.
Dewar’s is a much beloved Bakersfield institution and is still owned by the same family that first opened it in 1909.
