B&E Burritos

When we visit B&E, we’re fresh from a hot springs visit in Truth or Consequences (highly recommend). We’re relaxed and starving, and thrilled to try the best burritos, red and green chile, and tamales in Hatch.

Simple, fresh, delicious

B&E is directly off the main road in Hatch, just past signs for fresh-roasted chiles. There is a small area for outside seating, and a small line when we arrive.

We order a tamale and the Super Combo at the window, then wait patiently by the huge tree until we hear our name. We find a spot at one of the few picnic tables, then open our white Styrofoam container. And my goodness, it’s beautiful.

The Super Combo is enough for two, with two red/green enchiladas, one taco, red and green chile meat, fresh beans, rice and a single flour tortilla. Everything is insanely fresh and flavorful. We especially delight in a DIY burrito and stuff our charred tortilla with rice, beans and chile. The green chile — freshly made every chile season — has a great kick.

The tamale is wonderful: It’s moist and tender, great on its own or dipped in the red or green chile from the Super Combo. The taco is the least exciting, but still good.

Over four decades of tasty burritos (and chile)

It was 43 ago when Chile Willie and Esther Villegas opened a small family business in Hatch, New Mexico. They are the longest-standing restaurant in town, and the clear go-to for the freshest green chile burritos and tamales. They are also the head of quite a family, including three kids and 10 grandkids. It makes sense that they were one of the businesses that offer a discount to first responders during the pandemic. 

Esther is there when we visit, and she couldn’t be sweeter, or more thrilled that they’re still standing after this year. We are, too.
