Sorry you can’t join us for this event. Cleveland is an emerging food town with a helluva lot of good grub. There’s no shortage of information here on Roadfood about where to go while you’re visiting Cleveburg. Between buffetbuster, wanderingjew, and myself, we’ve easily listed a couple of weeks worth of good eats. And, of course, I know Nancy is originally from the area, so you know what you’re doing. Enjoy a Bearden’s Burger and think of me.
Sorry you’re having problems with the Doodle Poll, but it’s starting to look irrelevant. ChiTownDiner seems to have hit on the ideal weekend. Not a single objection for those dates (presumably, people will come in early for extra-curricular activities). It’s still early, and I’m hoping we’ll get more responses from out-of-towners, especially those who attended the Chili Crawl, but for all intents and purposes, I think it’s safe to mark your calendar for May 1-3, 2015.
Chicago is looking forward to seeing you too (although mostly Lisa). Don’t discount those “strange frankfurters” yet. Once you walk into one of our many Hot Dog Joints and the heady aroma of 100%beefmustardonionrelishpickletomatosportpeppercelerysaltonapoppyseedbun infiltrates your sinuses it’s near impossible not to eat one. And yes, even without the CSD, you’ll eat pretty darned good that weekend, guaranteed!
I’ve got my fingers crossed for good timing and cheap airfares!
Well, flights are booked. We are in and really looking forward to it. Have not been to a Roadfood gathering since Buffalo / Rochester.
Nagle we meet in Buffalo back in '09. I'd be happy to ride the 2 of you around Chicago. My wife, Picky Peggy is no longer with us but I will have my oldest granddaughter, Ava, with me.
You may remember picky Peggy and I as the people following the bus in our car as she was on oxygen at that time.
Mike S, it would be a pleasure meeting up with you again and meet your granddaughter. I remember chatting in the parking lot at Shwabels possibly while we waited for the replacement bus to come get us. We are sorry to hear about Peggy.
Your offer of a lift is greatly appreciated.
How about the Prospect Heights area?
I’m in for sure. Remember, the itinerary will have to include at least one bbq stop to make some people happy [:p]
ALL Chicago pie shops are put on notice that buffetbuster may grace the Windy City!
Hoosier Mama and Bang Bang Pie Shop may want to go on red alert right now!!!
What a great weekend!
Jen and I have had a wonderful time. We ate LOTS of great food and met some truly wonderful people. We can’t thank Mike S enough for his generosity in offering to drive us around the city on this fantastic tour. We shared meals and lots of laughs over the last couple of days. Mike and the Canadians will be at another event as soon as we can.
Won’t speak for Jen as she will be signing up at Roadfood under her own user name very soon, but some personal highlights for me were;
U Gazdy, Calumet Fisheries, Bang Bang Pies, Poochies and Freddy’s.
Many thanks to Gregg and Jeff for bringing this event together. Much appreciated. You did a great job. Sorry we won’t be at Burt’s tomorrow, but that just gives us another reason to get back here for a visit some day.
John & Jen –
Forgot you were not on the Burt’s Sunday stop and missed out on a chance to say good-bye! Enjoyed meeting you both and look forward to breaking bread in the future…after all, we’ve still got over 3 million cities to meet up in !
Gregg – CTD
One of my ideas for next year’s vacation with Cousin Johnny is to do the entire drive around Lake Michigan. We could schedule it so that this event would be at the beginning or ending weekend of our journey.
Spreadsheet is great stuff. My tummy hurts already.
He’s (CTD) a fine gentleman, and will watch over your selections carefully. Here he is watching Buddy 9 years ago, Once a Roadfooder…always a Roadfooder…
and earlier, taking the pressure off on the way to dinner the night before–We were headed for Three Brothers, and he was concerned that he would not get a normal meal there….
Finally my sandwich that day at Freddies, Meatballs and Peppers in Red Sauce. I couldn’t look at those big sad eyes as I ate, It made me feel that I had taken a child’s only meal for the day…until his wife made him stop with the staring !!
If I had known that Babushka’s Kitchen was closing I would have visited back in April. I had gone to Little Polish Diner in Parma instead and wasn’t totally impressed.
I can’t believe The Flat Iron Cafe went downhill that quickly. My photos that you were referring to were taken two years ago back in June 2012. I went there with TTM.
It’s certainly plausible, and I’m not doubting you, but I would have to check it out myself.Honestly I’ve always thought their pierogies were just fine, but certainly don’t compare to the ones at Sokolowski’s. I recall you saying the same thing about Tavern on Grand in St Paul back in 2010 I recall you had mentioned a change in ownership or management and when I went it was just as good (if not better) than ever. I had inquired if Tavern on Grand had recently changed hands and was told that the ownership/management hadn’t changed in “decades”…
Be that as it may…. I was surprised you hadn’t mentioned the Polish boys at Freddy’s Rib House. I visited the Lyndhurst location in 2011 as the original downtown location caught fire.. And sure enough, I went to check and they’re now out of business.
Not really sure, have to give it some thought…..
sorry, gotta bow out on this one- all booked up for next year
We’re in and couldn’t be more excited about it!!![lol]

The problem is always the date…so here goes…
Easter is April 5th so eliminate the weekends with the 5th and 12th.
That gives us the 19th, 26th and May 3rd weekends.
After May 3rd, graduations kick in along with Mother’s Day and First Communions etc.
As it’s warmer in May, I propose May 1-3, Friday – Sunday, with the tour date officially on Saturday, May 2nd. A quick look at the Farmer’s Almanac shows clear, 72 degrees, light winds from the south and low humidity with a dew point of 52.
With this kind of notice, everyone (except WJ apparently) can accommodate by simply insisting all brides elope early, season ticket holders to inferior baseball teams donate the tickets to charity, honey do lists are postponed another decade and ALL Chicago pie shops are put on notice that buffetbuster may grace the Windy City!
I may even get to Chicago early….
The ball is rolling Buddy! Let the fighting begin!
