Around 1990, a lot of those NYC-area deli mystery meat producers went out of business. Over time, the makers of crap were driven out of places when the consumer could see the brand being used. The survivors were Boar’s Head, Thumann’s, Kohler, Dietz and Watson,  and to a lesser extent, Hansel & Gretel. They raised the bar for the industry in general.

This fascinates me!  I’ve seen Kohler at the Krauszer’s just down the street from me (some of the best deli roast beef I’ve ever had), and a large Boar’s Head selection at Stop ‘n’ Shop.  Haven’t seen the other brands but I’m definitely keeping an eye out for them now. 
 

The name, Boars Head, has it’s origins in the traditional Boars Head Feast dating back to Pre-Medieval times when a Boars Head was served on a silver platter at a feast that occurred at Pagan rituals and later at Christmas time.
Today’s Boars Head company, over 100 years old, has its growth as a result of good products and even better MARKETING!
