The last time and only time I was in Ocean Grove it was a place with strong conservative protestant religious trappings, no booze, no food worth eating, no cars, no bikinis, I think the curfew was at 7pm, but a very nice beach, and plenty of good stuff to eat and drink just outside the walls.cheers, John
We wanted a quiet place with a nice beach, and don’t mind driving out of town for dinner, but thanks for the heads-up. I’ll leave my bikini at home.
I live in Ocean Grove, and don’t worry, the town is not like that anymore. Captain Jack’s is a great restaurant in town, and Nagle’s is too. Day’s is the best ice cream anywhere. The town still doesn’t have alcohol within its gates, but bikinis are allowed and you can drive on Sundays. There is a large NYC population and there is no curfew. Before 1980, cars weren’t allowed in town on Sundays and the town was much more restrictive. Have a good time-Ocean Grove is beautiful! [:D]

Ott’s Family Restaurant is a diner-style place located right on the boardwalk between OG and Asbury Park. Service is friendly and the food is solidly good stuff.
For a fancy dinner, try Moonstruck in Asbury Park right across the water. I personally have never been there but they have gotten really good reviews during the years (they used to be in OG but outgrew the building). There are no reservations taken so get there early. I’ve often seen people gathered on the porch waiting.

I haven’t been to the area in years, but the reason it was nicknamed "Ocean Grave" was because the town literally closed on Sundays (i.e. no cars allowed). Not sure if that is still the case or not.
I’m used to that. I grew up in Philadelphia.
Last I heard, nobody’s allowed on the beach on Sundays until noon. (You’re supposed to be in church. [;)] ) In fact, after a search, I found a nice website about Ocean Grove here: http://www.oceangrovenj.com/ And on the page about their beaches it says:
Beach Hours:
June 17th to September 4th:
Monday to Saturday, 9am-5:30pm
Sundays from 12:30pm-5:30pm

If you like nostalgia, Nagle’s on Main Street is beautiful on the inside. It is a turn of the (last)century Pharmacy turned into a restaurant at some point. There are displays along the wall, and it still has the old soda fountain where the ice cream sodas are excellent. I had pastrami on rye with a vanilla coke like I hadn’t had since the 60’s.I just see it as a must see when you’re in Ocean Grove if you’re interested history of the area.
That sounds really cool!! We’ll check it out for lunch. I have a serious vanilla milkshake habit.
So far, we’re planning to try the Blue Marlin & Mazi, in Bradley Beach for dinner.

Pete N Elda’s in Neptune for great thin crispy crust pizza. It’s just up the road.
Thanks for the tip!!! We will definitely try the Blue Marlin. We love Jamaican food and haven’t had it in ages!
There are really no good restaurants in Ocean Grave (nicknamed such because of the high population of retirees). In addition to Vic’s, I’d also recommend the Blue Marlin in Bradley Beach. The man who owns it used to cook at the Channel Club in Monmouth Beach. It’s an excellent Caribbean restaurant with very reasonable prices.
Clifden is one of our favorite towns! Had a nice lobster dinner at the Clifden Hotel.
Any idea if McCluskey’s restaurant in Bunratty is still open?
Thanks for asking your friend about Ocean Grove for me. I appreciate it!
Love the nickname (I’m a Joyce, and have visited family in "Joyce’s Country" in Leenane & Clifden in Ireland a couple of times in the past 4 years).
When my wife & I head to the Jersey shore (and we will be this coming weekend, coincidentally), we always head to Vic’s Pizza in Bradley Beach, just a few minutes south of Ocean Grove. The pizza is great, but you must get the chopped antipasto salad.
I’ve got a friend who lives in Ocean Grove and will try to get some recommendations from him.

Hi Everyone!
My husband & I will be spending a few days in Ocean Grove NJ this month and are looking for some restaurant recommendations. We don’t eat meat, but do eat fish and everything else!
Thanks is advance.
