I haven’t got much more to add unfortunately; you are covering some good territory I’d like to see myself, though I’ve done the shared track and Fort Madison. One possibility might be in Fort Maddy, Alpha’s Eatery next to the Kingsley Inn, across the tracks/road from the old station/casino area. Might not strictly qualify as Roadfood, but location appears good; view of track may be limited. Info here:

In Columbia MO
I just spent several days in Columbia and can recommend "Buckingham’s" on the Hwy 70 Business Loop for excellent smoked meat bbq and really good sides. The brisket is lean, moist and tender with a wonderfull real smoke flavor. The meat is served dry, and they have a large variety of commercial BBQ sauces available to use or sample, featuring the ones made in MO. Ask the owner which ones are best. Their french fries are perfect and the bbq beans and horseradish coleslaw are also good. Look for the cowboy riding a bucking pig. Try not to hit it at noon because the lines can be long.
The "63 Diner" on old highway 63 (MO 763) about 2 miles north of interstate 70 is wonderfull. Comfort diner food from the 50’s, probably much better than most of the old diners made. Everything I had there was great. If you are there on Wednesday be sure and get the pan fried chicken special. It’s not on the menu, but if you ask they will make a great chicken fried steak. They have some of the best homemade pies, especially the coconut creame. Great friendly service too.
My brother-in-law recommended Boone’s Tavern also, but I didn’t get a chance to try it. –
In Hannibal,
"Bubba’s" in an old warehouse right on the riverfront at the bottom of Broadway. It has good bbq, catfish and cajun. My favorite is the bbq pork steak and my brother-in-law likes their cajun. Get them to show you the waterlevel marks from various Mississippi floods in the past.
The Becky Thatcher cafe is a local spot on ?3rd? street downtown where all the old codgers have breakfast and lunch. Good home cooked and very reasonable prices, a little smokey though.
If you want something a little fancier, try Lula Belles in an old "Fancy House", also on the riverfront. Good steaks. Also Fiddlesticks along highway 36 west of town is another upscale place with pretty good food.

We have had a couple of threads that deal with the general area, but I need some specifics, PLEASE!!
Our roadtrip up the Mississippi several weeks ago was interupted by a family emergency. We are planning to resume ‘part’ of it next week.
We will meet Bushie and his family for an early dinner at the Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro, KY Wed. evening, then stay the nite in Mt Vernon IL. Thursday the plan is to start in Mt Vernon,IL, get across the River on the 270 beltway and follow MO-79 up thru Louisiana (stop at Stark Bro. Nursery to check on fruit tree specials) and Hannibal to Ft. Madison Iowa. Friday and maybe part of Saturday, will be from Ft Madison thru Northern MO– LaPlata, Marceline, Carrollton and Camden to K C .
As some of you know I am also a railfan…chasing trains, and photographing them has been a major hobby for years… So following the BNSF line up the River, then Following the Old SF line to Kansas City is something we really look forward to. We use a radio scanner to track the train traffic and photograph everything that moves (and some things that don’t!!
What I need are some recommendations for chow along the way. Sidetripping a few miles is no big deal. The object is to stay as close to the rails as I can without breaking the law. I have received some good rail info from one of the rail-hobby forums, but need to correlate that with good ROADFOOD. We know Kansas City, so skip that segment. We will probably then run for home with a couple of stops one in MO (near I-70 and one in IL (near I-64).
One more item…Any fleamarkets, local festivals, or fairs going on next week in any of the communities mentioned…or others that you know of????Please give a reference to them also..
