Thanks for all your great replies- were here now- yesterday and last night we got 6-8" of this fluffy cold white stuff- i think they call it snow (being from Miami and all I’m not sure but ive heard)-so we stayed home and had Curtis market pork chops (On Rte 90 just N of Moodys-its shortcut to Camden-comes out above Rockland-near Home DEPOT, and well worth buying steaks, chops, bacon, etc) marinated in local apple cider and fine baked rigatoni ricotta- and delish Giffords strawberry and moose tracks ice cream sundaes-you know b/c it was cold outside-purely medicinal. We had many Moodys donuts and pies, as good as ever,Sarahs for dessert 1 night – great and ridiculously big pieces of cake-peanut butter frostng w/cocolate layer cake- good but non-traditional german choc-coconut creme cheese frosting on/in good layered choc cake,a "sinful"(their name) flourless choc cake(son Sam barely shared,understandably-really good-giant piece)) and very good eclairs. Few disappointments-Primos, Shaws and Sea Gull Cafe(in Lighthouse @ Pemaquid) all closed for season. Weather permitting we are going to Boston tomorrow for weekend and will hit Bacco’s, Johnny’s and other recommendations on sep thread -re: Boston’s best. Thanks all and good eatin’.
Maine Diner is definitely overrated. That’s a "tourist" place for sure.
Marcy’s Diner is actually profiled on here. Just look under the Maine listings.
Stayed right outside Camden last summer…Fantastic. What a great town!
There is a little French restaurant in Camden that is terrific. Right near a big white church on a side street (near post office) Steak frites are wonderful!!! Sorry I cannot remember the name. Do a best of CitySearch and you’ll find it.
Wasses in Rockport is great. Brown Bag’s desserts are better than their sandwiches..Go to Wasses and then have dessert at Brown bag around the corner.
Primo is fantastic! One of the best restaurants we’ve ever been to.
Lobster Pound in Lincolnville is ok..easy to get a table.
Maine Diner…OVER OVER RATED!

must try cupboard cafe- sounds good. karen’s kitchen has gone way downhill- used to be pretty fabulous for breakfast (the big everything skillet scramble things were great) but since the move to the site of the old miss wisscasset diner the place has gone downhill in quality and service (imho). and someone’s got to try ship’s chowhall (in the former karen’s kitchen spot near sea basket)- i don’t have the guts to try it, but with maine you just never know. my wife grew up in alna, right down the road from red’s eats in wiscasset. i completely understand your proximity to moody’s needs- i’m of the opinion that a. there’s nothing wrong with eating breakfast, lunch, AND dinner at moody’s on the same day and b. if you are driving by moody’s you MUST stop no matter what and at least order a grilled cheese with bacon and a piece of pie (and probably a couple of those homemade cake donuts) and a whoopie pie for the kid. a hot opened turkey sammich with mashed would in no way be out of the question either. so to recap, i am SO needing a moody’s diner dinner right now, stuck in brooklyn ny eating pizza (which you can’t really get in maine). i always bring a few new haven (or now fairfield pepe’s right off 95) pies up to maine with me, but that’s another roadfood tale… enjoy fb
Frank-good stuff- i agree on Moodys allday long-my kids think im nuts- but 1 day they’ll get it!
Jim, ill have to find cd-i can see a whole stand up gig on Moody’s- heck Mainers too! but we love it- just like home in miami….not!!!
The Down Maine comic Tim Sample did a bit about two good old boys eating beans at Moodys on a Sat. evening. Damn funny. If you get a chance to pick up one of his Cds or tape money well spent. Chow Jim

oops, rereading your post i see you live at moody’s, so i’ll see you there… we can discuss the greatness of the 4 berry pie till the cows come home… enjoy fb
Frank-good catch. I struggle to choose between coconut creme, peanut butter, walnut or chocolate silk pie- also my wife now swears by rasberry warmed 1st, but only in summer and my younger son(15, 6’3") LOVES THE ECLAIR (bur swears Sarahs’ just over bridge in Wiscasset is better!). True story- when my Wife and I were looking to finally buy a place in maine we stumbled across a realtor in New Harbor who rented a house to us in Round Pond,- much to my W’s dismay I told realtor house had to be w/in 20 minutes of Moody’s or I wasn’t buying, leading to our discovery of current place in Chambelain on Route 32 -23 minutes from Moodys-but only b/c Rte 32 is curvy and broken up in places-too bad its not as well maintained as Rte 129/130 on south side of penninsula to Damariscotta.
We also love the Brunswick diner for breakfast, esp. the pancakes- do you go to Cupboard CAFE in New Harbor (actually just before turn off to harbor area). We tried Karens Kitchen, just south of Moodys on US1 on right for breakfast- good, but not worth it when Moody’s is so near. Any other places you like (oh and Primo is AN AMAZING FIND ESP FOR ROCKLAND ME. -WOULD BE WELL REGARDED IN NYC!!). WE are waiting to 4/1 to make reservation!

if you are in the midcoast maine area, you would be really shorting yourself by not going to moody’s diner- a bunch of times!!! moody’s is in waldaboro, it’s on rt. 1, a bit out of your way from augusta but SO worth the drive. one of the great old school diners in this world- amazing breakfasts, incredible dinner specials (boiled dinner, liver and onions, turkey dinner), and the hot open turkey sandwich with gravy and mashed is one of the best in the world. also, don’t miss the whoopie pies, all the homemade pies (4 berry, strawberry rhubarb, blueberry)- they are dripping with lardy goodness (my friends in ny regularly make me bring 4 berry pies whole back to the city- you can’t even come close here in nyc…). moody’s also has a good lobster roll, and it’s far cheaper than most in the area (i think 10 dollars)- it’s no red’s eats lobster roll, but it will definately get the job done. MOODY’S!!!!!!!!!!!!
after that, A-1 diner in gardiner is interesting and sometimes very good, Slates in Holliwell is fine, skip the thai and sushi place in holliwell (gross), Primo in Rockland is spectacular!, Bolly’s is not for the faint of stomach (though good, most of the time i’m the only person in there under 300 lbs… greasy and tasty but serious…). we also like the hi-hat drive in in holliwell for cheap pancakes and breakfasts (not fine dining by any means but fun with the kidz).
and depending on when you go, the Sea Basket in Wiscasset may be open for the season and it is so spectacular- the fried seafood is some of the best in maine- shrimps, clams, everything awesome. and a delicious lobster roll, perhaps second only to the great Red’s Eats- you can sigh as you drive by red’s and plan your return trip in the summer to eat the world’s greatest lobster roll- i try and eat 2 lobster rolls from red’s a day in the summers (yes it breaks the bank and i simply don’t care- best lobster rolls in the world). there are plenty of great places to eat lobsters in maine, lobster rolls can be a bit tougher- winter lobster rolls are pretty much out of the question (please see my early trials and tribulations documented here in the forum of trying to get a good lobster roll in winter- not enough traffic to sustain any good ones). best thing to do for a good lobster in winter is call around and ask local restaurants if they have nice fresh little guys (nothing bigger than a lb. and 3/4). then go eat a pile of them- most places in maine can basically boil a lobster well, you just want a place that has fresh ones brought in that morning. enjoy and please report back on where you ate and how it went!!! enjoy frankbooth
oh yeah, the Brunswick Diner on Rt. 1 in Brunswick ended up having the only good lobster roll this past winter- it was not frozen, fresh, plentiful, tasty, it was mixed with mayo but that was fine (in summer red’s lobster roll with butter simply melts away in your mouth, 15 bucks a pop, worth every penny)… brunsick diner will definately work and is open all year round. and also check out Fat Boy drive in in brunswick across from the former naval base- excellent and fun (seasonal to though).

Marcy’s for breakfast in Portland.I spend a lot of time there in Portland, I have some rental property there. I’ve never heard of Marcy’s just where is it? I’ve been to Beckey’s but most of my breakfasts are at Tony and Ann’s on Forrest Ave, nice spot. Chow Jim
Where is Tony & Ann’s? Curious minds want to knowDoug
Yeah me too- we usually go to Becky’s- but willing to try better breakfast places. Tried to find on Mapqest -no luck- Tonys donut shop closest match.
If you’re looking for an excellent breakfast place in Portland, try
Hot Suppa. The Porridge and Corned Beef Hash are delicious. This used to be the Old Friendship Cafe which was previously reviewed by the Sterns. Although I thought Becky’s was "OK" Hot Suppa blows Becky’s off the face of the earth

Sorry to hear about Slates.
Second the recommendation about J’s Oyster- the best restaurant in town (IMHO).
There’s the hot dog place in Lewiston called, I believe, Simone’s. Also, is Maurois still open? A good old fashioned Sunday dinner kind of place.[:)]
A-1 Diner in Gardiner has both standard diner fare and more eclectic.
Big G’s Deli in Winslow for breakfast or lunch. If you eat there, you won’t need dinner.
Purple Cow Restaurant in Fairfield is very close to I-95 and is very popular locally — cafe-style.
As I have said many times here..
Freeport Maine…Off I-295..Yarmouth/Freeport Exit–turn onto US1-North–about 2-3 miles up the road.
..Bucks Naked BBQ..
Left hand side backed up to the Interstate.
It is some of the best BBQ I have ever had.
Hard to believe a guy from CT can make some great Q.
I know you want to eat seafood when in Maine, but sometimes you just gotta take a break.
