Continue right through and don’t stop! it is a non event but an even occurs just south on 101 at San JUan Bautista about 5 minutes off the highway. charming town, great places to eat and it’s where Vertigo by Hitchcock was filmed along with San Francisco scenes.
NYNM— It is Castroville,CA that is the Artichoke Capital. Castroville is a short ride from Gilroy!! We have enjoyed visiting Castroville Many times both while Fort Ord was in operation, and now that it has retired. We like to stop at the Central Texas BBQ in Castroville.[:p]
Somehow i also remember Gilroy as the Artichoke Capitol. Could that be true, too?
Wasn’t it Will Rogers who said, of the garlic-redolent air of Gilroy, "It’s the only place you can marinate your steak just by hanging it out on the clothesline"?
Mama Mia’s on First Street in Gilroy is very good. It’s a local chain (Morgan Hill, Campbell, Felton), but I’m always impressed with their food.
I passed through Gilroy numerous times when I live in the Bay Area. I agree; not much there. The "Garlic" Center does have an incredible array of products made with garlic…generous samples. I could appreciate the varied oils, but some of the "sweet" products, (and garlic wine) was a little too much for me!
Gilroy has just about every chain restaurant ever conceived but not one local roadfood joint in this very small town. If your coming to the Garlic Festival July 28,29 and 30th then that’s a different story…….. the festival is every thing you ever heard it was. And for the three days it’s food city USA and then nothing the rest of the year……………..
There is an In-N-Out Burger……. lol
and one for the largest shopping outlets you’d ever want to see……
Where is your final destination?
Does anyone have recommendations for lunch in Gilroy CA (the garlic capital of the world)? I’ve driven past that town many times, but never stopped to eat (nor have I been to the Garlic Festival yet).
Eating in Gilroy, CA?
