From what I understood from talking to people living in the area, Dollywood really helped the whole area financially. It may be touristy but the beautiful Smokey Mountain National Park is there as well as Cade’s Cove. The road that has all the artist’s shops on it is great.
One may chose to do the tourist bit (I did and liked it) and one may enjoy any of the natural attractions (which I did and loved).
I believe you are incorrect about Dolly Parton. Dollywood only obtained her name a little better than 10 years ago. Before that it was thriving as Silver Dollar City. She upscaled it considerable. She has done nothing in Gatlinburg as she owns no property there and she contributes mega bucks to Sevier County School system. The only thing she has added was the Dixie Stampede.
I do not deny that Pigeon Forge is very touristy but so is Branson, Orlando and many other places. Go over to Townsend for some peace and quite.
She is a very charitable person.

Dixie Stampede = redneck Medieval Times.
It’s very possible to have a nice vacation in the Smokies without the tack, though. Plus you can get really good breakfasts at a number of different places in the area (Apple Barn, Black Bear, Pancake Pantry). My husband and I were married in Gatlinburg and spent a week at a gorgeous country inn just outside of it for our honeymoon. We did take our wedding guests to Dollywood the day after the wedding and they, Yankees all, adored it.
Hate to be negative…….. But IMHO Dolly Parton has ruined both Pigen Forge and Gatlinburg with her cheap touristy attractions. I liked it much better when there was nothing in Pigeon Forge than the Valley Inn and some goofy golf. The tourists have ruined/loved it to death.
I liked it when I attended but it was on someone else’s dime so I don’t know if I can make a fair judgement about its value. My gut call is it might be worth a visit if money is not a major concern but it is n not something that would be a can’t miss.
Walked in it a few years ago. Strolled in w/ family (wife and two daughters), my wife turned around and said "we live on a farm, we know what s**t smells like and we don’t eat in barns" Never got around to noticing no tools.
Sounds like Medieval Times, same kind of menu @ $60 a person. I don’t remember horse smell but it sure raises a lot of dust and my then 9 yr old nephew loved every minute. Is there anything in Pigeon Forge not a tourist trap?
What is a potato slice? I personally think the whole thing is over-rated, and $98 for two people to eat with your fingers, food that you don’t get to choose yourself. What if you don’t like chicken, corn, potato soup, etc.? Certainly a tourist trap (kids like it though).
I went years ago with the whole family and we had a really fun time… from what I can remember, the food was pretty good (though messy without cutlery!) but nothing really special enough to write home about. The show was great, but overall I thought it was a bit on the expensive side… though my dad did seem to love the pig racing!
I think it is more about the show than the food. I am a native of the area and I support Parton’s efforts but the smell of animal smells does not support my food thoughts.
I think I will pass.

98 bucks and no utensils – sounds like the food is an afterthought. The show better be REAL good.
I had promised to write a review of the Dixie Stampede dinner show in Pigeon Forge Tenn. While it is true there is a distinct odor[Horse sh*t] in the Arena,it doesn`t distract from the show,or the meal. You`re offered your choice of drinks from your Confederate server,& then served a warm soup[potato]with a garlic biscuit, then a baked Cornish Hen,corn on the cob, potato slice,BBQ brisket,& a great fruit turnover for dessert. The one drawback is you have to eat everything with your fingers-no forks or spoons are provided-;but the meal & the show was certainly worth the $98.00 for my wife & I. And it is the most popular one there, although there are others[Fiddlers Feast] that are worth your time & money, too. All in all,I would recommend it to everyone……..[;)]
