Cooper’s Old Time Pit BBQ has opened a branch on I-10 west of Katy. I understand it’s a very big joint. And that’s quite a jaunt for many Houstonians.

Early reviews are so-so. Its clear some folks were expecting something like Franklin’s but Cooper’s cooks directly over mesquite coals, ‘cowboy style.’ They’re famous for the Big Chop.

I only made it out to the original once so I’ll be looking forward to checking this out.

There is a Cooper’s in New Braunfels I haven’t tried yet.Nor have I been to City Market in Luling, or Chisum Trail BBQ or Kreutz’s in Lockhart. A local place in Cibolo, 2 miles from me, does a very good smoked catfish.Yes, they have you standard bbq meats, but i guess they do it as Lent approaches.

I have been to the Cooper’s in the Fort Worth stockyards and it is very good. Unfortunately, my travels have never taken me to the not-quite-original location in Llano. I don’t know how many times, though, I’d have to be in Houston, before I wanted to go here instead of Gatlin’s or Killen’s.

Gatlin’s is solid. I regard them like City Market in Luling – they do just about everything well.

Killen’s – never been since he opened his place but went to the pop-ups and was underwhelmed. The guy gets a lot of love from the foodie media, though.

I like what I’ve had at The Pit Room but so far have not been to Pinkerton’s, Feges, the Houston location of Truth or Tejas. Nor the two newest places getting buzz, Blood Bros. in Bellaire and Brett’s in Katy. If only I were 10 or 15 years younger.

Killen, who started out promising to knock A. Franklin off the top of the TX Monthly lists, is instead concentrating on multiple locations and multiple formats. He’s taking over the old Hickory Hollow location on Waugh, just west of downtown, for a place that is going to be more of a home-cooked meal type of menu, with CFS, tamales, – lots of Texas comfort foods, I take it.

That’s right across Washington from Truth’s Houston location and in addition to his STQ a little farther west and a new place in the Woodlands.
