HankNBugsy – here’s a recent post of mine on the Best & Worst Tacos forum:
"Best. No doubt at all – my favorite Mexican spot in the world is Taco House in San Antonio, on San Pedro, just north of Basse. Breakfast tacos to die for – bacon/egg/cheese, chilaquiles, chorizo/eggs, everything. Other tacos – carne guisada, chicharron, papas rancheras, chicken fajita, etc. – just as outstanding. They make the flour tortillas right there, as all self-respected San Anto taco joints do, *and* they make their corn tortillas fresh too, and they’re amazing – as fluffy as the flour tortillas. Great caldo (res and pollo) too. Nopalitos and eggs on a seasonal basis, etc. An extensive menu, with nothing bad on it."
HankNBugsy-No trip t S.A. is complete without a visit to Mi Tierra, a local favorite. It’s a Mexican bakery/diner, with the best breakfasts in town. Open 24 hours if you need a nosh in the middle of the night. It’s on Dolorosa, across from La Quinta ( I always stay there, so I can walk across the street to eat at Mi Tierra ! ) a few blocks from the Riverwalk, and in the Market Square ( lots of great shops).
actually, I may be in Austin next weekend and give one of them a try. Last summer artist Karen Brenner held a competition for subjects for her painting series on Texas horses, and my mare was one of the ones selected.[:D] The series is being exhibited at Sheplers in Austin this week. Spectators will vote for their favorite painting and the winning piece will be the next one on her t-shirts, mugs, etc.
Well, then drive up to Austin and eat at Maria’s Taco Xpress, or my favorite, Porfirio’s on east Holly St.
Looking for suggestions for the best place to get breakfast tacos in San Antonio? I’ve tried the usual suspects (Rolando’s, Las Palapas) and some hole-in-the-walls(Ruthies, El Tapatio, and lots of others) and have yet to find the right place.
