Just got back from taking my son back to college in Ithaca, NY after Christmas break. Our route from Northern VA to Ithaca takes us up Rt. 15 through MD, Penn. & NY. On Saturday our first stop for lunch was at Chubbies Barbecue in Emmitsburg, MD. http://chubbysbbq.net http://chubbysbbq.net/ This place has become a regular stop for my family since my son went off to college. Always get the pulled pork sandwich with fries and collards. Never had a bad meal there. Need to try the ribs next time.
After unloading my son’s belongings at his dorm, we were invited to go out to dinner with a group of my son’s college friends. Like most college kids, finding inexpensive food is a priority. Turns out Manos is a pretty good diner. Food is simple and inexpensive. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger & fries and although a bit on the small side, for less than $5, a great deal. Beer was cheap too. I had an IPA for $3.50. Open 24hrs, next time we will try the breakfast.
Next morning we had brunch with our son at another place he recommended, “Waffle Frolic” http://wafflefrolicking.com http://wafflefrolicking.com/ An eclectic “waffle house” opened by former students located in downtown Ithaca on “the Commons”, featuring a good variety of waffles & grilled cheese sandwiches, coffee, teas, etc. My wife ordered a simple waffle & maple syrup. My son and I both went for the fried chicken & waffle. Came with 3 medium-sized (dark meat) pieces of chicken. The chicken was OK (I’ve had better),but what made the dish was the “maple hot-sauce” that came with it. Next time I might try one of the grilled cheese sandwiches.
In a hurry to finish the 6hr. drive home, my wife and I didn’t stop for dinner, just some snacks at a Sheets in Lewisburg.
