Blackstone’s Cafe
Review by: Michael Stern
Tucked around the corner from Bay Street and the historic Beaufort waterfront, Blackstone’s Cafe is a two-story, bare-table café decorated to the rafters (literally) with U.S. Marine and nautical memorabilia. You could spend days in here studying, reading, and admiring the stuff on the walls.
What to eat at Blackstone’s Cafe
The lunch menu is mostly deli sandwiches and a few salads. We came in search of hot breakfast and found a great reward: shrimp and grits (also available at lunch). This is a broad bowl filled with a mix of steamy white and yellow grits, just barely buttered, in which are suspended approximately 100,000 shrimp, the whole shebang blanketed with melted cheese, savory demi-glaze, and a sprinkle of dill. Utterly delicious!
The corned beef hash is excellent, too. This is the real stuff, definitely not from a can. It is chunky, brine-bright, and deeply satisfying. On the side come grits, eggs, and slices of toast or an English muffin. We ignored that breadstuff and chose a sticky bun instead. It turned out to be a soft, sweet mesa of dough that was plenty sticky and coated with chopped pecans.

I want to start off by saying I have been coming to Blackstone for 10 years every summer with my family. The service has always been amazing. However, the new management is very disrespectful and has no regard to their staff or customers. I was there 4 days out of seven last week and each time management refused to acknowledge our family and treated us as if we were invisible. This past Sunday 06/25/23 she began to be irate and disrupting the entire restaurants environment by yelling and degrading a server. We felt this was highly unprofessional and unacceptable for anyone to be treated as such; Therefore me and my family will never return there unless you get new management. Thank you. I wish Blackstone well.

We took a motorcycle ride to Beaufort just to have breakfast at Blackstone’s Cafe. Shrimp & grits & eggs & crabmeat & hot french bread… wonderful! The friendly staff were working hard to make sure everyone was well fed and watered.
The last thing I ever expected to see in Beaufort, South Carolina was the free WiFi along with signs encouraging folks to pop open their laptop and stay a while. Drink coffee, eat shrimp, check your email. Breakfast and lunch until 2:30PM daily.
