Signe’s Heaven Bound Bakery & Cafe
Review by: Roadfood Team
Anyone familiar with Hilton Head Island understands that in an effort to preserve the character of the island, the town fathers have made finding any business establishment literally a game of “hide and seek.” And finding Signe’s Heaven Bound Bakery & Cafe is no exception.
What should I eat at Signe’s Heaven Bound Bakery & Cafe?
The bakery serves breakfast, cold and hot sandwiches, quiches, tarts, salads, and a large array of freshly baked breads, cakes, and pies. No alcohol is available but they offer a wide selection of coffees, teas, cappuccino, latte, and juices. The deep-dish French toast trio (blueberry, blackberry, and regular) is superb. The homemade corned beef hash Sunrise boasts lots of tender corned beef and perfectly cooked poached eggs. The accompanying toasted 8-grain bread is so good that we bought a loaf to take with us for our trip home the following day. Breakfast comes with a side of fresh fruit. The coffee at this bakery is fresh and full of flavor.
Place your order at the counter, then find a table. When your order is ready they somehow find you amid the other happy patrons. In season there is also outdoor seating. For a visitor to Hilton Head Island, Signe’s is a breakfast or lunch treat.
Finding the bakery
The building itself seems more like a professional office than one that would host a gourmet bakery on the first floor. For the visitor who perseveres and stops by for breakfast or lunch the journey will be very well rewarded. Signe (that is the owner’s name) started the bakery in 1972 and has been impressing locals and visitors now for 35 years. *Original post by Cliff Stehle*
