Southern Pit

Review by: Roadfood Team

The slogan of McGhin’s Southern Pit Bar-B-Que is:

“When I get hungry I throw a fit
if I can’t eat at Southern Pit”

What to eat at Southern Pit

And the meat is the reason to throw a fit. The barbecue pork is really a standout. It is moist and tender and smoky. The ribs are excellent as well. They are smoked just right. One nice option that is available on the menu is a small rib plate. This is great for those who want ribs, but are on a budget or do not want to eat a large portion. Small plates are available for the barbecue pork and beef as well. And for big eaters, there is a “Smoky Combo Feast” that comes with pork or beef, along with ribs and chicken.

The side dishes that are included with the plates are a good Brunswick stew and finely chopped coleslaw. A wedge of cracking’ cornbread is also included with the plates. French fries can be substituted for an extra charge. Buttermilk is one of the drink options.

McGhin’s is kid friendly. It has corn dogs on the menu, as well as a child-sized stew with cornbread.

Cobbler is usually a good dessert choice. The chocolate cake is a little plain by itself. So it is a good idea to ask for a scoop of ice cream with the cake.

The food is normally brought to your table quickly.

Although the address of Southern Pit Bar-B-Que is shown as on a busy highway, the restaurant sits out-of-view from the highway on a small service road. So look for the highway sign. Otherwise, it is very easy to miss and drive past the turnoff.

The Southern Pit is only open from Wednesday to Saturday.

I live very near Southern Pit. I wish they had good barbecue because it would be so convenient on nights when I don’t feel like cooking, but it does nothing for me. It’s more like roast pork than barbecue. I have to say that a lot of folks like it though; the parking lot is usually crowded. Good service and reasonable prices, but that doesn’t make up for the ‘cue.
