Flip Burger

Worth a detour

There’s no denying that Niagara Falls is touristy. But it’s all worth a little effort and a lot of mist to see 3,160 tons of water pour off the falls each second. If you find yourself on the American side with an appetite, go past the Hard Rock Cafe, around the corner, and find Flip Burger.

There is absolutely nothing fancy about Flip Burger. There isn’t even a bathroom. Stemming from a simple and “unrelenting love for the burger,” it serves good burgers just minutes from the roar of the falls. Plain and simple.

Choose four (single) or eight (double) ounces, then maybe add cheese or Applewood-smoked bacon. From there, select from a wide array of toppings. I go for such classics as mayo, ketchup, pickles, tomato, and lettuce. Then I add charred grilled onions and a dash of Sriracha. The dense brioche bun is soft but sturdy enough to hold its own against the barrage of ingredients, and the whole thing tastes so gloriously American (I say this after taking a trip to the Canadian side). The meat is seasoned and cooked well; the proportion of toppings to cheese to meat is spot-on.

For a spicier and saltier cup of potato goodness, try the Cajun fries, served in overflowing portions. I love ketchup, but both fries and burger are tasty in their own right. No ketchup needed.

Should you want them, vegan burgers, Nathan’s hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, and grilled cheese also are on the menu. If you need a pick-me-up after the huge burger, there are hand-spun shakes, cookies, coffee, and tea. We opted for a nap.
