O’Betty’s Red Hot Dogs and Sausages

Review by: Roadfood Team

Oh my: O’Betty’s may be the perfect spot for hot dog lovers and gourmet tube steak gluttons. This hot dog slinging shop quickly won the dining hearts of Ohio University students and Athens locals since opening in 2003. It has been voted best Athens hot dog each year since 2004. The theme of O’Betty’s involves hot dogs named after various striptease and pinup models from the first half of the 20th century. The hot dogs are 5 Star all beef dogs with a natural casing (one of the best commercially available hot dogs in the country). There are twelve “varietease” of dogs including a create-your-own style and a tofu dog for vegetarians.

If you want a Chicago-style dog, go with the Salome (“Dance of the 7 Veils”): sport peppers, sweet relish, pickle spear, diced tomatoes, diced onion, Stadium mustard, and celery seed. Any kind of topping you can think of is available as well as salsas from Casa Nueva (a local, organic, slow food coop restaurant), baked beans, mushrooms, and, on occasion, toppings such as corn relish, pepperjack cheese, and mango BBQ sauce.

This reviewer’s current favorite is a bratwurst, The Sophie: a Sheyboygan brat with diced jalapenos, mustard, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and fresh chopped parsley on a toasted, crusty French-style roll. Delicious. And the fresh-cut fries are perfect.

The dine-in area accomodates about 10 people so most people do carry-out. On a Friday or Saturday night/early morning, expect long lines of college students waiting for their chance to get the perfect hangover food.

Another bonus at O’Betty’s is the mini in-house Hot Dog History Museum and Weiner Hall of Fame.

O’Betty’s Red Hots and Sausages became an instant fixture in the downtown, late night, food scene of the university town of Athens, Ohio since its opening in 2003. It was not long before the business and daytime crowd began frequenting the delicious little hole in the wall as well.

O’Betty’s serves all-beef, natural-casing hot dogs from a small butcher in Cleveland, Ohio. Almost all the toppings are homemade from well-tested recipes and made of the finest ingredients. The shop features fresh-cut french fries, available plain, Cajun spiced, with fresh minced garlic, cheese, chili cheese, or any combination of these. The menu also features brats, hot links, and specialty sausages as well as an amazing Philly cheesesteak sandwich (known as the Tiara Lee). All menu items follow a burlesque theme (including Blaze Starr, Lily the Cat, and Dixie Evans to name a few) and the logo of the the shop is “the weenie with the wiggle.”

The atmosphere alone is well worth the stop, with pictures of famous and not-so-famous customers and a hot dog museum. The dining space is limited, but there is a rumor of an additional dining room being added by the end of the 2008 school year, including a handicap accessible restroom. I highly recommend the delicious food, wild atmosphere and friendly conversation found at O’Betty’s Red Hots.
