Biscotti

With cognates such as German Zweiback, Jewish mandelbrot, and Michigan Trenary Toast, biscotti is by far the best-known twice-baked pastry for dipping in coffee or wine. The original biscotti from Italy were crunchy, oblong cookies containing pine nuts and almonds. The shape has remained the same, but modern biscotti bakers’ creativity is limitless. There are chocolate biscotti as well as regular biscotti glazed with chocolate. Coffee houses – their familiar habitat – might offer gingerbread biscotti, white chocolate biscotti, coconut biscotti, even bourbon-butterscotch biscotti.
