“You must stop in Nehalem,” advised an Oregon foodie named Ashley when she heard I was heading south out of Cannon Beach. “Wanda’s makes the best huevos rancheros you will ever eat.” I may have had better versions of the traditional borderland breakfast, but not within 1000 miles, and certainly not in a one-of-a-kind place like Wanda’s.

Breakfast began with a cup of Oregon-excellent Sleepy Monk espresso. Even more potent beverage options include Irish coffee and bloody Mary as well as something called a “laughing Wanda,” which is vodka with orange juice and peach nectar.

Following Ashley’s advice, I went for the hot-breakfast menu and a plate of huevos rancheros. They are kaleidoscopic: corn tortillas topped with black beans and great flows of pepper jack cheese, and salsa, all crowned with a pair of fried eggs and chopped green onions.

If there were nothing to eat along Oregon's North Coast from Lincoln City to the Columbia River, we'd still come here for its natural beauty. No superlatives exist to describe the magnificence of the ocean, the shore, and the forests threaded by Highway 101 along the coast. In fact, there are many wonderful eateries along…
