Charm School, AKA Charm School Social Club, is a unique ice cream parlor on Richmond’s Broad Street. Why unique? First off, the academic theme: vintage etiquette books on display, posters and wall art that educate viewers about proper behavior, and a flavor menu entitled “Today’s Lessons.” In the front window is a school desk; walls are painted with shelves of text books. Ambience is ingenuous retro.
More important, Charm School is unique for its ice cream. Made on premises, from scratch, using cream from grass-fed cows, it is pure. Flavors range from fundamental (vanilla, peanut butter swirl) to such exotica as Thai iced tea, ginger-lime, honey rose, and peach crisp. There’s even Cinnamon-Toast-Crunch-with-Milk flavor! (The current line-up, which changes day to day, is listed on Twitter at @CharmSchoolRVA.) Cones are made on premises as well (and are vegan).
Several vegan flavors are available, and the menu (er, lesson board) notes which flavors have gluten or nuts.
Charm School’s full repertoire is limited to ice cream by the scoop; and there are sundae toppings: hot fudge, salted caramel, toasted Fluff, vegan Fluff, whipped cream and vegan whipped cream, fancy sprinkles, and Virginia peanuts. Milk shakes and sodas are not available.
