Known as the rubber city (because Goodyear’s here), Akron offers good opportunities to taste the foods of Hungary and Poland, as well as custard of the quality found only in the Midwest. Strickland’s first started selling custard in 1936 and it now is franchised around the country. This is dense, thick, creamy stuff available in cone or cup, sundaes, shakes, sodas, and banana splits. There’s extra value visiting Strickland’s in Akron because it is just across the street from Akron Fulton Airport, which is the home base of the Goodyear blimp. Another all-American treat up in northwest Akron is Swensons (no apostrophe) for a Galleyboy burger: a double cheeseburger dressed with two sauces, one mayonnaise-style with bits of onion added, the other zesty barbecue. There is no indoor seating at Swensons. All food is delivered into the parking lot by car hops who carry trays to hang on car windows.
