Sam’s Original Restaurant

Review by: Roadfood Team

There is in fact a menu at Sam’s Original Restaurant, but no one pays attention to it. This is a place to savor the buffet, a cornucopia of perfectly prepared southern home cooking that includes country ham, smoked brisket, fried chicken, and a rainbow of beautiful pies.

Sam’s Original excels tremendously at what so many roadside buffets attempt to present and fail – a cornucopia of perfectly prepared southern home cooking. Trust me: everything is so delicious that you’ll find yourself doing math to fill your gut – especially when you realize you have to leave room for pie!

Sam’s does a brisk business pretty much any time of the day you arrive (lots of locals – always a good sign) and as a result, food items are replenished frequently, preventing the curse of past-their-prime offerings suffered by so many well intentioned buffets.

What to eat at Sam’s Original Restaurant

The buffet begins with an absolutely huge salad bar, one of the best I’ve ever seen. It has actual green leaves aplenty, but it also boasts a wide variety of prepared salads and delightful add-ons like watermelon pickles. Be modest in your selections, however, because there are seriously tasty side dishes and a changing rotation of show-stopping entrees just ahead – including mahogany BBQ, thick slabs of country ham, crisp chicken fried steak strips and golden fried bone-in chicken.

As if all those choices weren’t mind boggling enough, the waiter will come by to ply you with freshly baked bread from heaven as your eyes fall on the cobbler buffet right next to the island of pie.

My suggestion is to bring a second stomach – you’re going to need it.
