Even if the iconic Chicken Pie Shop of Fresno, California, finally closed (after half a century downtown), the city remains a wonderful destination for Don Pepe Taqueria’s superb Mexican-style shrimp — poached or tossed in spicy sauce and loaded into tacos and burritos or served simply in their easy-to-peel cracked shells. Another Fresno prize is The Annex Kitchen for first-rate Italian food, including house-made pasta and wood-fired pizzas topped with ingredients that range from familiar to a grand pesto & burrata pie that also includes bacon and fontina cheese.
