The Butterhorn Bakery & Cafe

Walking down Frisco’s Main Street is a charming experience, especially when it ends with a stop at The Butterhorn Bakery & Cafe. The restaurant has been serving locals and visitors comfort food for over 40 years. We walk up right before its gets super busy on a weekday morning around 9:30, and sit outside with a view of the mountains. Bonus: It’s a great vantage point for people watching.

There’s one server outside, and she’s absolutely delightful, patient and quick. They have an impressive coffee list, including cappuccinos and lattes, and all manner of milks.

We get a trifecta of delicious items, starting with the butter-crisped Eggy Bread, which is Butterhorn Barkery’s take on French toast. Four slices of homemade cinnamon fruit bread are dipped in egg batter and grilled to perfection. On top, a dollop of creamy butter and a side of maple syrup. 

Next, the Biscuits and Gravy, which is certainly a stick-to-your-ribs situation. The pork sausage gravy covers and drips down the sides of the flaky Southern biscuits. The bright yellow yolks from two over-easy eggs add richness to each decadent bite. 

A spice touch

It’s at this point that we discover the tray of house hot sauces that include “Hot,” “Hotter” and “Hottest.” I personally think the Hotter is the hottest, but they’re all quite flavorful and on the acidic side. They also have homemade smoky habanero ketchup and a spicy habanero mustard. We sample the sauces on the biscuits and gravy as well as the sandwich, which is our last dish.

The Egg Sandwich arrives on a bright red dish. A halved house croissant serves as the vehicle for creamy red pepper aioli, a thin slice of Canadian bacon, cheddar cheese and over-medium egg. It’s not as inventive as the others, but delivers a satisfying nosh before a day of hiking.

Bonus bakery inside

Inside, Butterhorn Bakery has a log cabin feel. Here, family and friends gather to enjoy long meals together without being pushed to leave. There’s a shelf of fresh bread, all the hot sauces, ketchup and mustard for sale, and two cases of tempting baked goods. If we weren’t bursting at the seams with breakfast, we’d get multiple items to go. I have my eye on their signature ginger snap, a slice of cinnamon crumb coffee cake and a huge snickerdoodle cookie.

We leave for the day, but consider coming back this weekend for the Saturday evening Butterhorn Live on Main Series, when local musicians set the soundtrack for small plates and cocktails under the stars.
