Roadfood with Misha Collins | Brownsville, TX: Episode 5 | Tacos

Tacos Galore

In this episode, we are tasting almost every taco Brownsville, TX has to offer.  This small city is 4-5 hours from Austin, San Antonio and Houston, and has recently been making headlines.  Interestingly, Brownsville is near the headquarters for the new Space X corporation headed by Elon Musk.  But we did not go for rockets and space.   We went for tacos.

Tortilla factory

We realized the taco scene in Brownsville is intense and our exploration did not disappoint.  This place is a taco haven.  He visits a tortilla factory with owner Camilo Carranca, to see how they are made.  This magical factory creates some of the most incredible tortillas that do not fall apart.

The restaurant scene

The restaurant La Vaquita is the next stop with owner Miguel Chavez.  Here, Misha works to build a giant meat skewer, eats multiple types of tacos and makes a mess dropping tacos in the kitchen.

At Vera’s Backyard BBQ Misha gets a real experience with Mando and Adila Vera, the owners of the restaurant.  He shows Misha the art of cooking a full cow’s head for traditional Barbacoa.  During this time, they wrap the cow heads in tinfoil and drop them into an extremely hot fire pit.  Meanwhile, they bury it with dirt and then take the cow heads out after a full day of cooking.

The Heroes in Brownsville

Next, Misha talks with Andrea Rudnik, who works for Team Brownsville, a group of former educators who help the immigrant population with goods and services that they might need.  Their mission is to the be the team who “works to welcome”.

It is amazing that Misha Collins took the time to visit Brownsville Texas. I’m from Harlingen Texas which is not far from Brownsville. He should try some Tamales of all kinds, and Menudo 😋. Trust me they are very good 😃

THANK YOU MISHA 💙 🪽

I really appreciate the fact that Misha seeks out the underbelly (no pun intended) and the local heros of communities that he goes to. Super insightful and informative.

I’d heard of Team Brownville but Misha made it up close-n-personal. And inspired me to make a donation to them.

Thank you Misha.

On Season1 Episode 5 in Brownsville, you visited a place where the tortillas had a different color, almost brownish red. Was that from the Tortilla Factory or La Vaquita with the huge skewer? Can you please send the name! They looked amazing!
Thank you

I rally like the show and Misha keeps it interesting as he has an open palate. He’s willing to try almost anything. I think I would have to think twice about eating a cow’s eye.

I was having a good laugh over the guys at Vera’s having Misha pulling the cow heads out of the pit and debone them. That must have made their month! Reminds me a lot of how we tease visitors with lobsters up here on the East Coast. Must have been very hot down there though; I don’t think I would have fared any better!

I love anything Misha does. I’m a big fan.. But I was very concerned when he entered that hot pit to retrieve that roasted head. He looked so hot and it was too scary! Please don’t let him do such dangerous things!! But I love his personality and everyone he meets love him. I really enjoy the show!

Wow! I wish I could have seen Misha when he was there in Brownsville. I live in Edinburg which is an hour from there. But I’m glad he was able to taste authentic Mexican food.
