Red Truck Rural Bakery

Review by: Michael Stern

The original Red Truck Bakery is an adorable little spot in a former gas station at Courthouse Square in Warrenton’s Old Town. Some of its unique specialties are 160-proof moonshine double-chocolate cake, suet-rich real mince pie, and bourbon cake that includes honey-sweetened root beer and Montmorency cherries. The bakery case contains harvest wheat bread with cranberries, golden raisins, and walnuts; a variety of savory, cheesy, and slightly sweet focaccias; dinner rolls, baguettes, croissants, and coffee cakes.

All those things and more are available at the second Red Truck Bakery, in Marshall, which was opened so customers have more places to sit and baker Brian Noyes has more room for cooking and for his thriving mail-order business. The Warrenton location is still open and still utterly charming; the new place has a menu expanded to include breakfast sandwiches, flatbreads, and other breakfast and lunch specials.

We are big fans of the fabulous sandwiches: chicken salad made from local chickens, egg salad made with eggs laid by those local chickens, ham and local (of course) cheese, meat loaf and a remarkably succulent non-meat beet loaf. There’s always a soup of the day (French onion is divine), and no matter what time of day it is or which location you are visiting, it is mandatory to walk out with a bag of Red Truck Bakery granola, which is the best on earth.
