Green Acres Farm

Review by: billyboy

Much like a high school romance, my first encounter with a Green Acres Farm pie was in the backseat of a car. A warm summer afternoon and a peach pie: no utensils, no napkins and upon the first taste of that late summer fruit and buttery, flaky crust, I was hooked. Luckily for me, my friends have a house just a few miles from the farm and I have been the happy recipient of many a peach, apple, pecan, apple-raspberry pie over the years. My first visit to this small, roadside farm that has been been owned and operated by four generations of the Yandik family (continuously since 1915!) was in 2016 and I called ahead to order some pies on my way to vacation with family in the Adirondack Mountains.  I’m sure glad I did as they sometimes run out later in the day.

I’ve eaten many slices of pie over the years and could be aptly described as “Body by Pie” but I have yet to find a pie that compares to the ones baked at Green Acres.  Tart cherries, sweet-tart apples and fresh peaches that still have some bite to them (the secret, I was told, is to use underripe peaches so that they retain their texture) are just half of what makes me purely giddy at the thought of a slice. The other half is the crust, the butteriest, flakiest crust I have ever hung a lip on and it is the perfect counterpoint to the flavorful local fruits. One bite and it is obvious that these fruits were on the tree or the bush not long before they were sacrificed to the pie gods.

While the pies are definitely stars of the show, the excellent apple cider donuts are not to be missed and are some of the softest and freshest I’ve ever tasted. They are moist and cakey, with a hint of apple cider and a liberal coating of cinnamon sugar.

Green Acres does sell produce as well as jarred and bottled honey, applesauce, fruit butters, mustards, vinegars, and more from local vendors; but I’ve found pulling myself away from the pie case to be somewhat of a Herculean endeavor. On occasion, I’ve bought peaches, a bag of cherries or a half dozen apples. Nothing tastes so good as fruit straight from the farm.

A few helpful notes: Green Acres only sells whole pies —  no slices — and is a cash-only operation. It is open from July 4th to Thanksgiving (though that is not always exact, depending on the weather), Thursday to Monday, 9:00am to 6:00pm.  Pies are available on a first come, first served basis; so if you have a specific one in mind, call 24 hours ahead and place an order.  I’ve done that before and it worked out perfectly.
