I remember White Tower Restaurants from the 1950s in Milwaukee. I can recall two. One stood on the northeast corner of 2nd and Michigan. The other was on the north side of the alley on the west side of Sixth Street, between Wisconsin Avenue and Wells Street. At the time I worked at a Religious Goods store on the avenue. Many times I would walk down the alley to pick up a bag of hamburgers for lunch. They put McDonalds to shame!!

I worked at the White Tower Restaurants in Atlantic City during college breaks in Texas. Man what a neat place to work. Made some really great friends while working with other college students from all over the east coast. One big party.

I was practically born with a White Tower hamburger in my mouth. My Mother worked for White Tower upon graduating from high school, in the Baltimore/Washington, DC area, and retired after 42 years of service in 1982. She was actually working the day I was born, and just barely made it to the hospital. White Tower hamburgers were the best. You got a fresh, non-frozen hamburger with all of the fixins. Later, as they expanded, you could get a delicious meal for less than $5.00. AND, you could get breakfast 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I worked for White Tower during the summers when I was out of school. It was a great learning experience, and I met a lot of interesting people in Washington, DC.

I remember the White Tower at the corner of Crown and College streets in New Haven. It was a great place to grab a couple of hamburgers and a plate of baked beans after a movie, or after an evening drinking at a place called Jocko Sullivans.

They seemed to be most common in the Mid-Atlantic & Upper South. I remember one on Broad St. in Richmond Va. When I was little we used to exit the Richmond-Petersbug Turnpike and eat there on my family’s north-south car trips. Years later my dad and I stopped there for kind of a nostalgic kick, and were shocked to find the place over run with drunks and hookers! BTW, I saw one still open in Atlantic City a few years ago, but it was in a SCARY neighborhood!

Thought the name sounded familiar, cooper, but could not quite put things together. Then after reading your description, Julia I, I do recall White Towers from some locations back in the ’50’s & ’60’s, but cannot remember for certain exactly where; assume most likely some spots in the northeast US. Remember definitely the buildings and eating at a few of tthem, but like you, Julia, I surely don’t remember anything about their burgers.

We had one in downtown Milwaukee, near the corner of Plankinton and Michigan, I think. My Dad took us there occasionally while we were growing up in the 60’s. I remember a small, rectangular white building with a slightly higher, square ‘tower" at one end. I always ordered a cheeseburger, but I don’t really remember what they were like.

I remember some in Philadelphia but I never got around to eating there.
