We are exploring two options. One is out west, and another is down south. We are still figuring out logistics, but hope to have a decision in a week or two.
I really think that a place like Pittsburgh would be pretty good. Plenty of great places to eat of a pretty good variety and a spot like the strip to spend some time walking around.
This will be my impression of the Traveling Man:
Please note the choices are: Charleston
Portland,Or
Memphis
Santa Fe
Other cities would be wonderful but these are the choices before us. Though I think an alternate title for these fora ought to be Sons and Daughters of Anarchy(like the TV show). I would like too see folks come to the west coast and a day spent at Ecola Seafood, Norma’s, and Waves of Grain Bakery in Seaside-Cannon Beach would be a scenic delight with a final stop for pie at Camp 18 would provide a unique experience. Portland has a wide variety of places as well, ranging from ethnic Mexican and Ethiopian to sandwich shops run by first-rate chefs to maybe the best in country coffee-bakery combos. Also a vibrant food-cart scene. Portland is a great unknown food city but i know i would welcome the nation here and would be great to have so many roadfooders here.
Can we all stay at your house??[:D][:D][8D]
Hello all
You are all invited to the 8th Annual Jersey Hot Dog Tour hosted by Benzee and John Fox on Sat Sept 24th , 2011 .
For those traveling from long distances we can assist with any logistics neccesary .

Being from Chicago, I’m just surprised he has voted six times!
ONLY six times![lol]
I vote for Charleston hands down. Some of the best food on the planet. I vote a strong 2nd choice for Memphis. Either way you can’t lose…
I forgot to add make it after the hot/humid summer. Late September on would be OK both CHS or MEM, October being ideal.

Afraid I’m going to have to change my vote from Santa Fe to Memphis. A review of my, umm… “fiscal situation” has convinced me that New Mexico isn’t really an option this year. Probably just as well, as I still haven’t been to Charlie Vergos Rendezvous or Interstate BBQ.
Caroline Bob –
Do you think you’re from Chicago or something..changing your vote like that!
Last time I checked my birth certificate, yeah. And CAROLINE Bob??? Do I look like the subject of a Neil Diamond song? ( believe me, “sweet” I ain’t! ) [;)]
In Addition to the locations already mentioned I would submit-
Kansas City
Milwaukee
Phoenix/Tucson (Winter travel only)
Denver (Non-Winter travel only !)
Good Food being the highest priority in the selection, but ease of travel and accessability to the whole Roadfood Community merits some consideration as well.
Portland would make it accessible to us west coasters[:p]
and kirk, welcome.
KC and area would be interesting too.

Trudy and I are still hoping Portland and the Oregon coast will be the choice. Some of Western Oregon’s best weather is that time of year.,
Oh yes; BALTIMORE! Not that I have a prayer of actually attending….[:(] Poor me! But, I could look at photos of Maryland grub for hours on end……[:D]
[H5] As unconventional as it may sound … the State of Kansas has a plethora of unique and kitschy dining destinations. We may be windy, flat and aesthetically boring BUT!!! we know what good, honest food is. From kolatches at Two Doors Down in Cuba (a cover story for Nat Geo back in the ’80’s) to Cozy Inn burgers in Salina to (my mother sat at the same counter back in the ’40’s!); of course, BBQ in KC and the surrounding area… my personal fave is Guy and Mae’s in Williamsburg.
And as much as I hate to rip off GF from FN, the Cafe on the Route in Baxter Springs is amazing. I Haven’t been to Bobo’s in Topeka or Brint’s in Wichita but Grinders in the River Market (here in KC) is worth every minute. I don’t want to play favorites to my stomping grounds, but you can find any cuisine for your dining pleasure here in the metro, and never get bored.
Lawrence boasts a huge population of Earth/Eco friendly destinations. Lindsborg has Scandinavian food at it’s finest and I am certain that there are a million little hidden gems across the plains that are just waiting to be found.
I recognize from your past musings that a trip through the Wheat state would be a diversion from you usual trip itineraries. Just thought I’d throw it out there for the heck of it.

Are all those places open in the autumn?
You’re right, that would probably have to happen before Labor Day, wouldn’t it?
