why not look into gresham house the dining hotel facility at Bethany College just down the road-its a beautiful setting
Well, thank you all (including Robearjr for the laugh). The date keeps getting changed around due to various circumstances so we can’t book anything definite yet. As soon as they have a date I’ll meet my daughter and her fiance out there and we’ll check out these places (and any more that might be suggested). I have been to the Country Club twice and enjoyed it but wasn’t sure if you need to be a member but I can find out. Went to a brunch at the Holiday Inn once and was underwhelmed but got rave reviews from someone else about a wedding reception there. Haven’t been to St. Florian’s but liked what I saw on their very thorough website. And hadn’t heard of the Serbian American place so will add them to the list. This is why I love these boards!
Dearfolk,
In a place like Steubenville, Ohio (hometown of Dean Martin), there’s gotta be INCREDIBLE ethnic eats for dirt cheap in some hole-in-the-wall that hasn’t been "discovered" yet… and you could have ten or eleven ethnicities to choose from!
This is one thread that I will want to watch to see what other posters suggest. I haven’t been to that area since 1968.
Wheeling Myself On Home (Directly), Ort. Carlton in Athens, That Athens Of Georgia (not Ohio!).
I live in Steubenville, and my suggestion would be the Serbian American Cultural Center on Colliers Way in Weirton. The facilities are excellent and so is the food; I’ve been there for several events. They do a LOT of wedding receptions. Better call them soon, they are as busy as St. Florian.
We went to a big birthday bash at the Steubenville CC a few years ago. It was decently done. I think you have to "know" someone to book it, but as country club business is way down in most parts of the country, this shouldn’t be hard to do.
What about the Mountaineer Race Track and Casino. It’s right over the line from Stubenville. Rather than listening to a bad wedding band, people can go try their luck with the ponies.
Oh my. Well to tackle your first suggestion of the Holiday Inn first. They certainly have big enough conference rooms to host a wedding reception but… it’s a Holiday Inn. The restaurant there is Undo’s http://www.undos.com. I’ve been to a couple of events they’ve catered and it’s not much different to the restaurant itself. My opinion is that the appetizers and salads are pretty good, the entrees so-so.
I’ll hold off on actually suggesting anything until I’ve spoken to my mother-in-law who, like most mothers in law, has a wide array of opinions on everything some of which are occasionally right.
This is not a typical roadfood question but I know several of you live in the area. My daughter will be getting married in Steubenville this fall. She lives in another part of Ohio and I live in Virginia so we’ll be planning this long-distance. Any suggestions for nice places for a wedding reception? My first choice is St. Florian Hall but it is booked for all of September and October. I have stayed at the Holiday Inn in Weirton; has anyone been to a reception at their restaurant? Another suggestion is The Rose. I went to a small party (a couple dozen people) there but it was a few years ago and I wasn’t thinking of ever needing it ourselves so I don’t remember it very well. The reception will probably be about 200-250 people so a reasonable price and sufficient space are necessary, and also easy to get to from the college campus. Thank you for any suggestions!
