Hi all the San Antonio area is getting Wayback Burgers. One is going to be on USHWY 281 and I think Loop 1604.The other one is going to be in Universal City, right in my neck of the woods. Has anyone ever tried them, and if so, are they tasty, so-so or what?
Wayback Burgers started as Jake’s Burgers in northern Delaware. I thought they were good when there were only a few locations in that area, but that they went downhill when they expanded to a larger chain and changed their name.
They aren’t bad, but I would say they are not as good as Five Guys, Shake Shack, Culvers or Freddy’s.
I ate at the Original Jake’s in Newark, DE, a few times. It went out of business in the past couple years, as did a number of the older locations. The original spot felt more like an old-fashioned burger joint than a modern fast-food restaurant.
Thumbs up to Freddy’s. Culver’s is okay. 5 Guys in a pinch. Haven’t tried Shake Shack yet.
I see there has been a Wayback here, in the SE suburb of Pearland, already closed. It was in a Walmart and some of the reviews were pretty brutal.
But I see they use Sabrett’s for their hot dogs. That’s what I would go in to try. (Freddy’s uses Vienna Beef).
BTW, I haven’t mentioned it but we got our first In-n-Out in December, just about 5 miles from me. I haven’t been yet but will get around to it.
When it was Jake’s, we used to go to them in Delaware. They lost their whole Jake-ness when they had to change everything because of litigation. I also think they changed a lot of the food quality. If we’re starved/broke and in the area, we go to the one in South Jersey. It’s just OK anymore. It’s just not that different from 5 Guys, except 5 Guys’ burgers are much smaller than they used to be, not as tasty as Wayback’s, and I wish there were more choices in South Jersey. I think Red Robin is awful and I haven’t tried whichever new ones there are yet.
Thanks folks.I’ll try them .There’s an In and Out Burger down on Walzem Rd.and IH35N. in Windcrest. Thought I’d try it.Was good, but man that place gets packed. I like the Five Guys in The Forum Shopping Center. I can sit outside and eat when the weather is nice. If i go there it is after i get out from TJMAXX on a Saturday or Sunday, but i don’t eat there all the time. Freddy’s is also in the Forum, down the hill from Chic-Fila.burgers are thin though, and the fries are shoestring, but it was tasty.Still haven’t tried their custard yet. Haven’t been to Potbell Subs, or a couple of other places there. We also have Red Robin there too.
HH: would we have known you by a different name prior to the forum, uhm, “upgrade”?
edit: sorry, figured it out via your profile link
TJJackson, my user name is HollyDolly. That’s how everyone knows me here. I visited their website, and the food looks good anyways. There’s a Mr.Juicy on McCoulloch in San Antonio,.It’s a local place, not a chain. We also have the local chain chester’s Hamburgers here. Haven’t been there in awhile. They have poppyseed hamburger buns which are good, and they make the french fries the way my mom made them.
Let’s see if my reply works. I, like many of you have been semi locked out for a couple of months.
We have a nearby Wayback that I have been to a few times, the most recent a few years ago when my late Mom wanted me to take her there. They are in the local WalMart plaza. They were good, but not enough so to get me to quickly return.
I see that my post worked, so I’ll add……..
My local wayback opened in a larger location, and then moved to a smaller location, next door, to make room for a credit union branch office. The 50ish guy working, looked to me like a down sized executive who was sold a franchise. We have a lot of these guys around here. Years ago, I knew a guy in the reserve who had a day job of selling franchises. His key prospect was a former executive, out of work for a year, who had equity in a house, and/or savings.
I used to get Wayback coupons (none recently). They offered a deal on TWO burgers, but I only need ONE. The hand made shakes, are actually pre made. The ice cream has been pre measured into the cup, so when you order, they just add milk, spin it up and serve. The burgers are good, the shakes just so – so. I’d return if somebody wanted to go there, but otherwise, there are other places with a better cost/taste ratio.
