Love your trip reports. Keep ’em comin’.
Billyboy,
Re: Denny’s Hash Browns
My wife and I used to go to breakfast at the Denny’s down the street 15 years ago, when we both were working and going back to college. After repeatedly sending the hash browns back for more browning, I discovered the trick to getting them right the first time. I would tell the waitress that I wanted them burnt. Worked every time!

it made me realize that just cause a pic might a little blurry does NOT mean that the Roadfooders MIND is blurry, as well. They could still be a real good food critic , but just have taken a bad pic.
What’s happened to me a few times is that I’ve already taken perhaps 3 pics of the food, and don’t want to draw any extra attention, so I just hope that at least one of them looks decent when I download it..
I will try harder, though..and Billy Boy, I did’nt realize that the Tollhouse Pie was a staple on the central New York menus. Unfortunately , it has only trickled onto the menus in NJ. Guess it makes me appreciate it even more, in that case!
I wasn’t trying to pick on you, Ellen. I know that you’re intentions were good. Sorry about being so blunt. However, there are some people on this site that really like to hammer people for their photos or reviews. I know that when I’ve written trip reports, I haven’t provided photos, but I’d prefer subpar photos than nothing at all.

Great report! Thanks for sharing. Your pics were right on the money. You know some folks post out of focus shots, and instantly become report critics.
uh, oh, you might be talking about ME (among others)…
as I’ve posted some blurry close-up food pics… (my New Years’ resolution will be "clearer close-ups"!… sorry
Happy new Year all,
Excellent trip report BillyBoy . My wife loves Dennys also but I cannot stand the place and would rather visit a local breakfast place or one found on roadfood.

thanks so much, billyboy for understanding, cause I did’nt want you to take it the wrong way…
I hear what you’re saying, too..
I always enjoy your trip reports; hope 2008 brings many more of them for us Roadfooders to enjoy!!
Ellen, I hear ya on the showing more of the food in the pic. I’m always worried about changing the original presentation though. We always seemed to have Toll House Pie on most menus in CNY when growing up. Nice and warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Milw, I do wish there was a blikzzard when I was up there. Growing up in CNY, I spent a lot of time skiing (downhill and x-country) and a lot of time snowmobiling. It’s definitely not easy for non-locals to adjust to all that snow and lack of sunlight. The Utica-Rome area is #2 in the U.S. for least amount of sunshine. Dutch and Wannab, the tomato pie is savory, although the sauce doesn’t have any herbs in it, so there is a bit of sweetness from the tomatoes. The riggies have been one of my faves from years. It can be a bit busy with the flavors and ingredients for kids, but some kids like it.
Nice, thanks. I have to have one of those steak and greens sandwiches some day. That is real roadfood. Those tomato pies I bet taste pretty much like Hazleton pitza.
Great report! Thanks for sharing. Your pics were right on the money. You know some folks post out of focus shots, and instantly become report critics. Is that tomato pie really sweet? Wow – never heard of such a thing. Rigatoni is my kids favorite pasta.
Billyboy,
Thanks for the great report and pics! The tomato sheet pie looks very interesting, is it sweet or savory? I guess if it is used as a birthday cake, it would be sweet, but I have never seen anything like it. Keep it coming!
Thanks,
DG
nice pics, Billyboy…
I was hoping to see a pic of the tollhouse pie (my favorite!!) .
It seems more of a delicacy, as it is not on most dessert menus. So I get real excited when I come across the dessert.
Re: your steak and greens sandwich.. Where’s the beef ?!?!? I know, it’s hiding under all that cheese. I have a request for you and all my other Roadfood buddies… and that is when you take a pic of a cheeseburger, etc, would you be able to brush away some of the cheese , so the meat can be seen a little bit… (or turn it over on the other side for another pic)
Am I the only one that would love to see the meat?
I agree with you about those Denny’s pancakes. Cause a few weeks back, I had a strange craving to go have some pancakes at Denny’s down the street from me. I don’t know what came over me, but I had to go with it. And I was pleasantly surprised just how delicious (light and fluffy, and not dried out) those pancakes were. I had some of their "slider" burgers to take out…. the burgers were very lackluster, (never got the pickles I asked twice for) and the service at the counter was fair to middling… I had to ask a few times to get more water, extra butter, but the items kept arriving with apologies, at least.
Glad you enjoyed Rome and bonding with your 2 and a half year old niece!
35 years ago I spent an entire summer in the Rome, Utica, and Oneida area. I almost moved to Oneida until I heard the average snowfall totals! Great pictures and a nice report.
My girlfriend and I just spent a week in Central NY for the holidays. A couple of days in Rome, NY and the rest in the Syracuse area. I took some sweet food pics (with more to come). I didn’t get to any diners or get to sample as much Roadfood as I wanted to, but I did get to spend a lot of time with my family and my 2 1/2 year old niece. so I think I got a good deal. Enjoy!!
We took Amtrak from NYC to Rome, NY and our first stop was dinner at Teddy’s, one of my favorite restaurants (and one I reviewed here). I was able to take a bigger variety of shots than I did last time. This is one of the Hot Caramel Apple Pie S I had for dessert. It was so incredibly good with lots of hot caramel sauce, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream and the apple crumb pie underneath is homemade.
Donna, the wife of one of the owners (I think), is in charge of the desserts and makes them all herself from scratch. The Tollhouse Pie is pretty great too. It’s like a big, warm, chewy Toll House Cookie with ice cream. One bite and it’s obvious that someone put a lot of care into making it.
Another shot of the Hot Caramel Apple Pie.
My Steak and Greens sandwich. Sauteed greens (escarole) are a Rome, NY tradition. Served as a side dish, for breakfast with toast or as in this case, on a sandwich. This consists of a grilled garlic roll, piled with shaved steak, sauteed greens and melted provolone cheese. You can’t really see the steak under the provolone and greens, but it’s there. I don’t think this is the best shot ever of some greens, but they are very garlicky and very tasty. The fries are some of my favorites too. Not shoestring and not thick cut, these crinkled babies are crispy and not at all greasy with a good potato flavor. I don’t know if they are hand cut or from a bag, but they are delicious! This was a fork and knife affair for me.
Sausage Riggies-a variation of Chicken Riggies, a central NY classic . Riggies are basically sweet peppers, mushrooms, onions, black olives and chicken with rigatoni in a light wine, tomato and cream sauce. Although, every restaurant had their own variation and there is even enough interest that a "Riggiefest" is held each year in Utica, NY. The sausage riggies are not on the menu, but they’ll make it if you ask. I’m not sure if it was sweet or hot sausage, although I think they usually have both available.
Broccoli and Red Pepper Garlic Pasta. Another one of my favorites. It’s (broccoli and red peppers sauteed in garlic and olive oil, tossed in linguine with Romano, red pepper flakes & spices)-directly from their menu. I didn’t like it when I was younger as I had found it to be too oily for my taste, but they changed it in the past few years and it’s not oily at all. However, the flavors of the oil, garlic, Romano, pepper flakes, along with the broccoli and red peppers really are a wonderful marriage. This version has shrimp in it. It can also be ordered with chicken.
A shot of some Shrimp Riggies.
For me, the shot of the day. I love there onion rings. I wish I could have eaten these side by side with the ones from 99 Miles To Philly just so I could compare them. This is a half order!! They come with a sweet mustard dipping sauce, but it’s best to eat them unadorned at first to get the flavor pure flavor first. These are definitely heavy on the batter (the batter does have a nice ,29,353818,0,23974,66.65.40.228
