Consider coming to Kansas by way of Iowa and include a stop at the Amana Colonies. Good family style German food, baked goods, a fabulous smokehouse, many wineries, etc. Also stop in Newton and get blue cheese at Maytag Dairy Farms.
While you are in Topeka, got to C.W. Porubsky Grocery and Meats. It has been in the Little Russia district since 1947. They have amazing horseradish pickles, superb chili in season (the season started today, October 1!), and big plump deli sandwiches. Meals are only served 11 AM – 2 PM on Monday through Thursday, but the grocery is open 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM Monday through Saturday. Not everyone likes the hot horseradish pickles, but those that do, love them and stock up whenever they visit.
Fuzzbutt, are you spending the night in St.L? If not,
I have always enjoyed US24 and US36 across Illinois and Missouri.
I 70 is pretty well documented on here, I think.
