If you are anywhere near titusville florida, (near cocoa beach)go to dixie crossing for rock shrimp, split and broiled with butter. I am never near titusville, but will drive for a couple of hours to taste the rock shrimp and hot corn fritters.
Just saw this online, and if you are checking your email while on the road, here is some tidbits from Miami…
A friend of mine in Miami pointed out this link is from 2002, but still are good choices..
Sorry for the old link……
Seafood and burgers? Combine the two with Shrimpburgers at the Shrimp Shack, on US 21 at Frogmore (St. Helena Island), just east of Beaufort, South Carolina…
We hit the Keys a few months back.
1. Breakfast with the Roosters at Blue Heaven (Key West).
2. Lunch or Dinner at El Siboney (Key West)
3. The Key Lime Pie at the Crack’d Conch (Key Largo).
Also…clams in garlic and sherry broth at Alonzo’s (or A & B) on the water were heavenly. Half Shell and Dennis Pharmacy are recommended as well (though Dennis is relocating).
B.O.’s Fish Wagon was overrated.
I found Joe’s Stone Crabs expensive and not worth the $70 lunch for two—especially considering we ate at the take-out place (the main restaurant had just closed). The potatoes are like chips…and come in a similar bag. Nothing special.
Tony Luke’s (in Philly) Roast Pork Italian may be the best sandwich in America. Period. Do some research. Have fun. Eat lots!
Thanks Gang… we appreciate your suggestions…
Looking forward to iT!!
I completely agree with RIDEANDSLIDEFOOD…..the GA Pig is a definite MUST for me and my family when traveling on I-95 near the FL/GA border![;)]
Lived in Islamorada, Florida Keys for almost 10 years…
I bartended at the Lorelei for a long time..
Best place to watch the sunset.. Live music.. Great Conch ceviche!
They had major damage from the hurricanes last year and are in the middle of a major renovation, but still a great place to go.
Here is a few more of my favorites there, that I used to eat at.
(lazy days clam’s, and steamers rock!)
For some great bbq The Georgia Pig I95 and rt 17 east, Brunswick Ga
For my favorite places from Miami down through the Keys, check out my previous post:
Have a blast on your trip! If you need any more suggesions for central FL, just let me know. [8D]
When entering the keys take Card Sound Road and stop at Alabama Jack’s to get into the "Keys" state of mind. The place is like a floating shack that is famous for its conch fritters so don’t expect anything fancy – Just have a beer and relax before heading into the keys.
I highly recommend Hobo’s (MM104) in Key Largo for great lunch specials, the Hungry Tarpon (MM 77)in the Islamorada area for excellent breakfast/luch options and the Green Parrot in Key West to hang out and tie one on.
I find that this mile by mile guide is fairly accurate – Just don’t mention Cap’t Ron to anyone – they’ll just look at you like you’re insane. Also, there are NO free drinks at the Green Parrot so don’t ask. It pisses off the bartender. Here is a link to the guide:
In Savanna try http://www.coffeebluffbbq.com for burgers or BBQ. In Daytona Beach there s the http://www.hollyeats.com/DaytonaChiliStation.htm for great hot dogs and/or chili, http://www.boothsbowery.com for excellent wings, or the Brickyard Lounge & Grill at http://www.citysearch.com/profile/2227361 for what some say is one of the best burgers to be found.
Quite a roadtrip you’ve got planned. I can help out a little with I-95 through VA.
In Richmond there is Buzz and Ned’s Real BBQ. The pulled pork and the chiken are the best choices. You take "Blouvard" exit off the Interstate through Richmond (don’t go around, or you will miss it). http://www.buzandneds.com/
Many peole like Croaker Spot for seafood, 119 East Leigh St. (804) 421-0560
You might also try Comfort. http://www.greenolivemedia.com/comfort/index.htm
Their mac & cheese is out of this world good!
Carytown Burgers and Fries is the place in Richmond for burgers. http://www.carytownburgersandfries.com/
We’re looking for great places to eat and visit on a road trip from Toronto to Key West and back late July.
We’re going down the east coast via I-90, I-87, US13, US17 & I-95 down through Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, and coming back via I-75 up the Gulf coast and all the way to Detroit. Also considering a possible detour to Nashville (I-24 & I-65) on the way back.
Love great burgers (roadfood AND regional fast food, sliders, etc.) as well as lobster, seafood, fresh-cut fries, awesome buffets, great fried chicken and especially unique local specialties.
Gimme your best recommendations, and feel free to ask about any travels to Toronto area.
