I really appreciate all of the input, especially from the folks that live in the area– thanks Jellybear & familydok! I was *really* hoping that Jellybear would reply, since I saw from older threads that he’s local and tells it like it is! [:D]

I’m getting really excited about this trip! Any other ideas, anyone?

Chris,I belive you were talking about Surf City Grill with the great Hamburgers and Dogs,It was right behind the IGA and across the street from the beach. Its now a Hotdog stand and not very good. The Riverview has been there for over Fifty years possibly more. The Breezway is referred to as the Greaseway here. The Jolly Roger Pier is still there despite the Hurricanes and the Hamburgers and hot dogs are still good but pricey. The Beach Shop Grill has been there forver and it too is a little pricey.

The Riverview Cafe in Sneads Ferry NC used to be great. Locals mostly. Really nice atmosphere. My normal fare was Oyster Stew, Fried Shrimp with French Fries and the BEST Hush Puppies I’ve tasted to this day. Washed down with plenty od cold Budweiser and it was the perfect meal.

They even provide a hat rack for thw locals to place their baseball caps until the meal is finished.

Man, I never thought I’d see this thread — my family vacationed every summer at Topsail when I was a lad. Jellybear knows much more than I, but the Breezeway (on the sound side, not the ocean) was where we ate most dinners, though my uncle swore that better seafood was to be had in Snead’s Ferry, possibly at Riverview (if it’s been there since 1980 or so). I loved the snack bar at the Jolly Roger pier for burgers and fries, and there was also a place for good hot dogs and burgers in Surf City, but I don’t remember the name. I can help for Wilmington, however: Caffe Phoenix on S. Front St. for one of the best bread puddings I’ve ever eaten! Jellybear, please update me on this info…thank you! [:)] Chris

Amen, Jellybear. I’m a local also and that’s where I buy my fresh seafood-Surf City Crab. I haven’t tried Ricks wings-thanks for the recommendation! I see we agree on Riverview-I went there as a child and the only things that have changed over the decades is the price!!

Snead’s Ferry is just as near Wilmington as it is to Morehead. I have a home on South Topsail Island and sometimes go to Snead’s Ferry to eat at the The Riverview. It is an old place and on the water. I think I remember that you can buy fresh seafood back of the restaurant. I buy mine is Surf City so I’m not sure. If you decide to go to Jacksonville shopping-your nearest town of any size-remember you can’t go through the base now without a military pass. You will need to go out to 17. You may want to drive over to Swansboro, it’s a quaint little place and not far from Jacksonville. There are also a couple of little restaurants on the road to North Topsail-one is in a little strip mall back of a health clinic. It has great hot wings. I’ll try to think of some more places. Snead’s Ferry is a quiet little fishing village.

    Welcome to Roadfood, Liannenc!!!

Isn’t Topsail Island near where Sanitary Seafood is located?? I was sent there by friends in Wilmington NC and like it a lot, it’s a real RFy kind of place. Of course after I went someone (maybe around here??) told me I’d missed something else good in that same town. No wait, that’s Morehead City. Shoot.

I’ll email my friends near there for you and see what I get. I wonder if ayersian will know anything (he’s from NC)… Good luck getting more answers!

My husband and I will be spending a week in the area (we’re actually going to be staying in Snead’s Ferry) at the end of March, beginning of April. I’m looking for some suggestions for decent places to eat and have searched the forums, but found very few suggestions that don’t involve driving into Wilmington (about an hour from where we’ll be).

We’re not looking for anything too fancy, but I’d like to avoid the usual chains if possible. We’re also not terribly picky eaters, so I’d love to hear about anything y’all think is good in the area– for meals, snacks, etc. From what I’ve found on the internet so far, it looks like there’s not very much right there in Snead’s Ferry or even very close by. It also looks like some places may still be closed for the season at that time. I’m hoping that you experienced Roadfooders will be able to help! [:D] We don’t mind driving some, but not an hour more than once or twice during our trip.

I did find that there are several fish companies in that area and would like any suggestions as to which is the best, as we will be doing some cooking while we’re there and I’d love to get some fresh seafood. With so many choices, though, it’s tough to know which to pick!
