And we Chicagoans appreciate your benevolence. Perhaps in time (say May1-3, 2015) you’ll come to appreciate for yourself the glories of the Chicagostyle Hot Dog, run through the garden.
Or maybe you’ll just have a grilled salami sandwich and be done with it.
No promises of course, but there might actually be an opportunity for a private party at Burt’s, if we do it early, before regular business hours. It wouldn’t be part of the Saturday Crawl, but perhaps as an extra-curricular activity on Friday, or Sunday for those folks who stick around for the whole weekend.
We’d be looking for a minimum of 25 people to be involved. Based on the turnout for the Cincinnati trip, that shouldn’t be a problem.
Keep in mind though, once you’ve had the Pizza at Burt’s, you’ll be done eating for several hours. Even though his crust is much lighter and airier than the typical Chicago Pan Pizza, it’s still a commitment.
P.S. IIRC, wanderingjew initially claimed he wasn’t available for the Cincinnati trip either. After much cajoling he miraculously found a way to join us and had a great time. So, whaddaya say Dale; do we need to shame you into this one as well, or will you save us all a lot of time and embarrassment and just give in now?
I loved everything I ate today…….from the char salami and fries, the minimalist dog, the lovely strawberry ice, the 12th St. Polish, everything at Freddies, etc. It was just an awesome day!!! Looking forward to my first taste of deep dish pizza at Burt’s tomorrow.
I’m not sure who’s driving in and who’s flying in. Likewise, I’m not sure who will need a ride and who can provide one. So, for anyone staying up north or northwest, I’m proposing meeting at my home in Des Plaines at the start of Friday and Saturday. We can condense into as few vehicles as possible and leave the rest of the cars parked on our safe suburban street. Anyone interested in being a driver or passenger can send me a PM and I’ll give you my address.
Those of you who have seen The Almighty Spreadsheet may have noticed that ChiTownDiner’s Friday starts at 6:45am. The Roadhouses are making Calumet Fisheries our first stop at 9:30am. As such we’ll leave our house at 8:30am, which means interested participants should plan on being at our place around 8:15am.
I know we’ve been telling you for the last eight months or so that Rand Red Hots in Des Plaines will be our first stop on Saturday’s crawl. Due to logistic and timing concerns, this is no longer the case. We’ll start Saturday’s tour at Poochie’s in Skokie at 10:30am. If you want to participate in Saturday’s carpool, you should plan on being at our home no later than 9:45am.
I apologize to anyone who made hotel arrangement near Des Plaines thinking we’d make it our first stop. You’re still in one of the more economical areas in terms of lodging, and the added distance will only add about 15-20 minutes to your trip as you head to Poochie’s. I apologize for the last minute switch. It was made reluctantly in order to get us an earlier start and a more logical route for the rest of the day.
Rand Red Hots will be our second stop of the day, after Poochie’s.
Our neighbor said she had that for dinner a couple of nights ago.
Right. Just like apizza and gyros.
The critical question is, how do pronounce the word “gyros”?
I can get cheep fares on Allegiant from Mesa-Gateway into Rockford so it’s doable.
As an aside, any of you considering coming to Phoenix anytime for any reason and have access to Allegiant Air service, check it out.
They fly into Mesa-Gateway in the East Valley.
Great for Spring Training Trips youze Cubby Fans.
Mesa-Gateway is the old Williams Field AFB.
It’s the Cheepest!
We are contemplating bringing a special treat for Dale.
In the next few weeks, Buddy and I would like to begin finalizing the majority of our itinerary. While there will always be room for audibles, we have some logistic items to work out. Please jump back to Thread #285 and take the Doodle Poll if you have not already done so. It will help us out especially on the Thursday evening and Sunday segments. Thanks!
Joe, we’ll be all over town. Not likely in downtown Chicago, although I’m not yet sure what ChiTownDiner has planned for Friday’s leg of the journey. Still, check out the hotel information in post #208. Unless you manage to get some loss leader weekend deal from one of the high end hotels on Michigan Avenue you’ll pay through the nose for a room downtown. Even if you get a deal, it probably doesn’t include parking which will be free at most suburban hotels.
I still think your best bet is staying in the Rosemont/Des Plaines area. You’ll be minutes away from O’Hare Airport with access to major expressways and primary surface streets. Plus, we’ll be starting in that area on Saturday, so you’ll be close to square one.
Traffic on Friday will probably be tight no matter where you stay, but if you stick to the burbs, at least you won’t need to fight commuters just to get to your hotel.
As we get closer to the big weekend, I’ll try to get a firm list of who will be in attendance and who will have a car. I’m hoping we can carpool as much as possible and keep the number of cars in our caravan to a minimum.
Hope that helps.
Yep. Those were the guys.
It was great seeing everyone and meeting new faces. I count the BG Fries as the best thing I ate today (thanks, SC!), with the Pistachio Italian Ice second, and the Chargrilled Salami third. The rest is kind of a blur. See y'all tomorrow.
Would it be safe to assume the group would arrive at FREDDIES PIZZA
some time AFTER 2PM on Saturday Afternoon,
and probably remain there for at least one hour or more.
(Yes, I realize these are loose estimates of timing)
I had a great holiday. Old friends, New friends and great food. What more could a guy ask for? Well the exceptional planning was a big plus.
It was great to put faces to names that I had seen on here for a long time. Thanks to everyone for helping to make such a great trip.
I have the leftover donuts if anyone is hungry.
Great job Gregg & Jeff.
