I worked in a Jewish bakery, the Bread Basket, in Framingham, MA when I was in high school. After I’d worked there for about a week, I stopped eating the sweet junk like the danish pastries and would just eat the bread, rolls and Challah. Oy (that’s an Irish expression). Such bread!. The boss was an absolute mensch (another Irish expression "AIE") who would ask us high class bakers (I actually worked scraping the wooden floors and washing huge industrial size mixing bowls)what our preference was to nosh (AIE). He’d slice some kind or incredible rye bread or onion rolls (made with fresh onions that when you heated the roll kind of softened but remained like real chopped onion) etc, spread some sweet butter on them and put it in the revolving-shelf oven to warm for a snack. this is a very sad topic for me. we celebrated many special occasions at my grandmothers house with a praline ice cream cake from grossinger’s on columbus ave in manhattan. when i was older i moved to the upper west side where one of the two original locations was still open (columbus and 88th i believe). i was in heaven fresh rye, danish, cookies and on special occasions with my family that praline ice cream cake. unfortunately it close about 10 years ago the last of the many jewish bakeries that doted the upper west side of manhattan. brings a tear to my eye.
h, well, you can always head up 71 to Columbus. There’s a Kosher bakery on East Broad Street in Bexley and Blocks,also on East Broad, but in Columbus, has good bread, bagels, bialys, even good hummentashen for Purim.
NJ Pork Roll
A great article appeared in the Newark Star Ledger about the old Jewish bakeries and delis of the area in early July. I sent someone to Sonny Amster’s, a descendant of Watson’s Bagels of Newark somehow, and got a batch of bagels the day before they closed. We signed up for their mailing list, because they have a place in Elizabeth and are looking for a new location since Staples pushed them out.
Watson’s Bagels, first of Newark, then Chancellor Ave in Irvington, and finally Millburn for the last 30 years, what a New Jersey icon. I can’t believe they’re gone… for now.
Last week I made a try at making a fresh pastrami. It turned out great and I went off in a search for a nice Jewish rye bread. No bakery in my area had fresh ones. I could have gone to LA’s Fairfax district—-but most of the bakeries and delis there from the "old days" are gone. Finally pick up a supermarket Orowheat Rye Bread—-but it wasn’t the same.
I agree… there hasn’t been a Jewish bakery in Louisville for at least 10 years, Kroger does have 2 stores that bake "kosher" but for true Jewish bake goods and deli.. you have to go to Cincinnati
In the past two or three years, my area of central/north NJ has lost 3 Jewish bakeries. Leon’s in Fanwood was the first to go. In late 2005, Margie’s in Plainfield was padlocked after the landlord sued for non-payment of rent. The latest (and saddest) is the demise of Sonny Amster’s, an institution in the Millburn/Union area for 30 years. Located in a somewhat seedy shopping center, along with Tabatchnick’s Deli (another old-timer), it fell victim to the landlord’s grand design to upgrade. A Staples will be opening in its place. [:(]
Once these places go, they are gone for good. The alternative is the local supermarket bakery departments, where ersatz ingredients and mediocrity rule.
