Has anyone tried the raspberry cream Tandy Kakes yet?? Have seen them in the stores but hesitate to buy a whole box full. On principle the raspberry & chocolate should be good together but your never know.
Thanks for the review, RR. Yuk! is not a good endorsement.[xx(] Some things are probably best left in regular cake form. I love Boston Cream Pie but I don’t think I’ll be buying those Kandy Kakes anytime soon. Besides, they haven’t shown up in Flourtown yet, Maybe you’re in a "test market", though there are a bunch of new Easter and St. Patrick’s items with icing colors not found in nature. They’re also giving absurd, cutesy names to the new products – which I suppose appeal to the target, younger consumer and maybe some adults, but I’m a purest and really can’t get into dark lavender icing on my chocolate cup cakes. And yes, Tarragon, I think Hippity Hops is a new name. Speaking of which I did buy a box of plain ol’ coconut KandyKakes or "Hippity Hops" today and had a pack for dessert tonight. Yummy as always. [:D]
News Flash!!! I came back from my local gas station/mini-mart at lunchtime with something I’ve never seen before – Boston Kreme Kandy Kakes. The package has a big green starburst on it with the word ‘New!’ on it. They’re the same as the peanut butter ones but have a strip of a Boston cream filling insted of the PB.
I had to taste test them immediately. Yuk! The Boston cream filling was overly sweet and had a strange artificial, chemical taste. The yellow cake and chocolate covering were fine. To give it a fair test, I chilled the other two for a while and then tasted again and ended up throwing the third one out – a first in my Tastykake life.
Hi Lorenzino! I was just so surprised to find those Hippity Hops [:D] that I just swooped down and scooped up two boxes. I should have gotten more, though. I hadn’t seen any since last year before Easter, and I got those in Wilmington DE. I was just getting ready to say that I’d never seen them at Halloween, but come to think of it, I -did- see them a few years back around Halloween, but forget what they called them. Yes, they are like a Mounds bar tandy take; if you like coconut, you’ll love em. [:P] I’m also wondering if the "Hippity Hops" name is new; I can’t remember if that was what they called them last Easter — unfortunately, my mother was in hospice then and I guess my mind wasn’t really on much else so I didn’t happen to notice (I was alert enough to purchase em though. LOL).
tastycakes…… can’t get them out here ( indiana) we do have little debbies though.. they are good but… nothing as good as………. tasty cakes and drakes — ( we can’t get them here either) i have a friend in jersey that sends me funny bones every now and then.. man– those are ‘killer’ , but to only have them every now and then is a real tease…..
and krimpets.. hmmm good too….
Nice to hear from you. Believe it or not I was in my local Genuardi’s/Safeway this afternoon and NO Hippity Hops! And I live and work only about 25 minutes away from the bakery. Go figure.
And the shelves looked newly stocked too.
So, Kristi S., don’t feel so bad, and I would email Tasty and see if you can order them even if they’re not on the website. You’ll love ’em. They’re like a Mounds Bar Kandy Kake
Tarragon, they make the same Kake at Halloween, though I can’t remember what they call it. Do you?
I have never heard of those, and I consider myself somewhat of a TK conoisseur. They sound great! No hope of finding them in Florida, I’ll bet…[:(]
Woo hoo, the Hippity Hops are back! [:o)] I was able to find them this past Friday at my local Safeway no less; I promptly bought two boxes and hid both. [}:)] These are the coconut kandy kakes that Tastykake makes around Easter time.
An HAPPY ALERT FOR ALL MINT KANDYKAKE LOVERS!!!
This past Monday 1/19, after at least 3 weeks without them, with no special minty season or reason in evidence(okay, maybe Valentine’s Day?? or since the filling’s green maybe St. Patrick’s)I found FRESH Mint KandyKakes – complete with nice, totally new packaging – at my local Genuardi’s/Safeway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!and at 2 boxes for $4.00!!!!!!!![:D]Hopefully they’ve made it into primetime!
Hi, I just looked at the website again and you CAN order a case of either the Chocolate or PB Kandy Kakes – look here: http://www.tastykake.com/shop/cases.asp? Their customer service is usually pretty good so it might not hurt to ask if you can mix chocolate and PB’s, (if you like both that is, for me it depends on my mood). I understand that they freeze well if you have the room.
Usually my supermarket(here in Springfield, PA) sells fresh KandyKakes (and many other varieties) – 2 boxes for $5.00, so if buying a case doesn’t suit you maybe we can connect somehow and I’ll arrange to ship ’em to you occasionally as long as you pay shipping & handling (I ship things regularly for my eBay business).
BTW – freshness was always one of the top priorities of the company (and NO I haven’t nor do I work for the company). As has been mentioned in this forum – the companies own delivery men would delivery on a regular schedule and remove all the Kakes that hadn’t sold since their last visit. While the local delivery system has changed with the disappearance of small local groceries, freshness is still an issue which I think is one of the reasons for TastyKake’s recent disappearance from areas far from Philly.
Thanks, Lorenzino! If the craving gets too much for me I may just take you up on that!
Thanks Jane. I actually live in Wyndmoor and work in Flourtown – small world!!!!
And thanks for the recipe – I printed it out and plan to make it once I loose the 5 lbs
gained over the holidays!
Welcome Lorenzino! I grew up in Wyndmoor. My Mom now lives in Erdenheim, and my sister in Oreland, so we have everything covered but Flourtown. (I bought many a TastyKake at ACME and Genuardi’s, though… does that count?)
I don’t remember the snacks you describe, except the Teens, though by description but not by name. My fave was always the PB TandyTakes (see my Rx above). I loved taking a small bite to expose the cake, then dipping them into cold milk. They came in 3-packs, but if you make a whole sheet pan, you can eat as many as you want! [}:)]
Hi CheeseWit and Tarragon too.
Good to meet you, CheeseWit. I lived in Havertown after S. Philly, before moving to Montgomery Co. (that Springfield not yours). Anyway…RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT you are. You jarred my memory!!! I do remember now – the 3 pack of KANDY KAKES!!!!! The big question is do you remember the cakes I described last night?? What I think were the original un-enrobed "Tandy Takes".
I have a magazine ad from 1960 that shows a Tandy Take which looks more like the cake I remember. I have a feeling they may have been just too labor intensive to make especially if it was easier to totally enrobe the cake which made it more like a candy or bonbon. There was also something called a TEEN shown on the ad at 10 cents each. I vaguely remember them – it was a one layer rectangle of vanilla sponge iced in chocolate with a wide white stripe down the middle. My parents have a history of the company which I’m going to borrow to see if there’s any sort of chronology of products.
I’ll see if I can scan or photo the ad and send it along to you if you’re interested.
Hi Lorenzino…I’m in Drexel Hill. Grew up on Tastykakes and worked for awhile at the firm that designs their packaging and some of their advertising. Tandy Takes used to come three to a package and they were available in only the original version and peanut butter. In fact, the peanut butter version was a seasonal variety.
The Kandy Kake name was coined about 20 years ago and I still call them tandy takes.
Hello again, Tarragon and thanks for the warm welcome! The only TastyKake that I ever remember seeing in a three-pac is the original all chocolate cupcake. Of the traditional "cupcakes" I prefer the cream filled chocolate ones with chocolate icing and the white stripe. I am a confirmed chocoholic though I have probably tried every variety of TastyKake at some time or another. I even tried the guava jelly filled cupcakes that they put out a few years ago. That was one taste I did not acquire. They were good but way too sweet for my palate.[xx(]
Next time you encounter stale TastyKakes at Safeway COMPLAIN loudly to TastyKake AND Safeway. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tasty sends you a case free – at least that’s what they used to do! And Safeway has no
excuse. I buy mine at Genuardi’s up here which is now owned by Safeway. You should find out how often and when they get their shipments and plan accordingly – that’s what I would do. [:)]
Enjoy the rest o’ the weekend and stay warm!
