Why do they call them "Wine" coolers when they’re actually a malt beverage, which is more akin to beer?

I was just wondering if anyone out there was familiar with Sun Country Wine Coolers ? They were out in like 1985-86 and then they just disapeered. Do they still make it ? If so, where ? If not what happened ? I loved those drinks
